Talon Virtual pick Lost

Columbus’s central combinations and CITY’s compact midfield shape the cup final. The Crew have shown repeated creation through connected passes and arriving runners, while CITY retain mobile receivers and wide delivery. In the other tie, Fluminense must overturn a first-leg deficit against a Palmeiras side that has already combined central protection with direct attacking outlets.

Columbus and St. Louis meet with very different ways of reaching the box. Columbus can build through several creators and wide receivers, while St. Louis can bypass pressure and find runners early. Their opening goal should change how much space each side leaves for the next attack. In the Libertadores return leg, Palmeiras' compact centre and Fluminense's need to chase set up another contest between wide delivery and quick breaks.

Opening night in the NBA brings three home teams whose size and handling meet a visitor with a hole in exactly those places. Sacramento have no real centre behind Sabonis and lost their second ball handler days before the opener. Dallas arrive with a thin frontcourt and a turnover habit against a Houston side that already beat them on the glass with its starters. Golden State lean on Curry and three-point volume, but the creators and size behind him are missing.

Two cup nights where the shape of the game matters more than the names. In Columbus, the Open Cup final pits a home side that wins by central volume against a St. Louis midfield missing both of its usual screens. In São Paulo, the second leg forces Fluminense to carry the ball into a Palmeiras block that already held them to almost nothing in the first leg. In both matches, one team's way of attacking runs straight into the place the other team is weakest.

Two openers, two different shapes. In New Orleans, Indiana's star is back, but the Pacers are missing exactly the players who protect the ball and defend the point of attack, against a Pelicans side built to take it away. In Houston, the Rockets' best repeated weapon, the offensive glass, runs into the thinnest part of the Dallas roster. One looks like a tight game decided by possessions, the other like a structural edge for the home side.

Two cup ties hinge on what happens after the first pass. Columbus can turn patient buildup into repeated box entries, while St. Louis can turn a broken attack into a quick chance. In São Paulo, Fluminense need their wide possession to become close shots, and Palmeiras can attack the space left behind that push. The timing of the first goal will shape how much room each side finds.

Charlotte's preseason was not a team waiting for players to come back. It was the exact guard group that takes the floor in this match, and that group kept giving the ball away. Brooklyn's starting five is unchanged from preseason and forced turnovers in every game it played. When one side's repeated leak meets the other side's repeated method, last season's records matter less than who is actually on the court.

Both Los Angeles home games come down to which roster has lost the pieces that matter for this specific matchup. Golden State arrives without its second creator, three wing defenders and its starting size, while the Lakers are missing only depth. Sacramento has just lost the starter who held its form together, while every Clippers absence was already part of how they played in preseason. In both games, the side with the absences not yet built into its numbers is the visitor.

Two cup nights where one side arrives with its spine intact and the other has lost the players who make its main route work. In Columbus, a home side that builds pressure through shot volume meets a St. Louis team without its striker link and both first-choice central midfielders. In São Paulo, Fluminense are forced to chase a tie against the exact defensive shape that held them to almost nothing a week ago. In both matches the game state is likely to push the weaker-equipped side into the kind of match it handles worst.

Two cup nights, both shaped by what one side does with the ball against a team that has to come at it. In Columbus, the hosts' possession game runs into St. Louis's man-marking press, and that press now has to work in front of a midfield missing both its regular central pieces. In São Paulo, Palmeiras carry a one-goal lead into a second leg against a Fluminense side that keeps the ball but rarely turns it into clear chances. In both games, the home team's own measured content is what I'm building on.

Como's 4–1 against United wasn't just a flood of attempts. United actually took more shots, but Como put far more of theirs on target, and Nico Paz was involved in the move that stretched the lead after the break. The early goal changed the chase; Como then found a way to turn fewer attempts into sharper finishes. That is a more useful story than calling it a one-sided shooting contest.

Cincinnati and D.C. both arrive with ugly recent scorelines, but the games behind them were strange in opposite ways. Cincinnati made chances against Columbus and got nothing; D.C. made its best chances early at Orlando and then faded. Their meeting could turn on whether Cincinnati's pressure keeps producing clear looks after a missed chance, and whether D.C. can make its early attacking threat last beyond one spell. The scoreboard alone is a poor scout here.

Palmeiras carry a 2-1 lead into this return leg, but the thing I keep coming back to is their back line: our absence list has two defenders suspended (Giay and Gomez) and Jefte out with a knee injury. Fluminense dominated the first leg and still lost, because they could not turn a lot of the ball into shots. So the question is whether a patched Palmeiras defence gives them the chances they lacked in Rio.

Bayern's pressure and Kane–Diaz combinations remain the central test for Arsenal, but the supply behind them is changing. Arsenal's current defensive pairing has recently limited the quality of chances allowed. Brugge and Lens bring two retained attacking connections into a contest where the recovery after the first press looks especially important.
