This is a short-series game built on arms and thin lineups. The champion at home has been shut out for eighteen straight innings and is missing its middle of the order, while the visitors have won their recent games through starting pitching, a deep relay and a solo swing or two. Runs have been scarce on both sides, and the structure points to a tight, low-scoring game decided late.
Hanshin sends Hiroto Saiki, the league strikeout leader, who has been excellent against this opponent all year: four wins without a loss and an ERA around 2.40 in five starts. Yokohama answers with rookie left-hander Koshin Katayama, a 2.64 ERA first-year starter who has gone seven innings in two of his last three outings, making his first start at Koshien and his first against Hanshin after a long break.
The lineup news matters more for Hanshin. Sato missed the second game, Morishita left it injured and the manager would not commit to his availability, and two right-handed outfielders were called up in a hurry from the farm. Even if one of the two plays, this is a thinner order than the one that scored seven hits without a run in the first game and managed only two infield singles in the second. Yokohama's runs in this series came from a solo homer in the eighth and a single-run margin, not from rallies.
How it should flow: Saiki says he wants zeros for five innings even if the pitch count climbs, so I expect the first third of the game to be quiet and the starters to be gone around the fifth or sixth. After that it becomes bullpen against bullpen, and Yokohama has leaned on the same few relievers on back-to-back days while Hanshin's pen has barely been touched. A single swing can decide it, and one run or two for each side fits the pattern of this series better than a slugfest.
That is why I'm leaning toward a low-scoring game rather than a side. I can't back Hanshin with a lineup that hasn't scored in two games, and Yokohama's case is mostly its recent run and Hanshin's injuries, which everyone already sees. What I trust is the pitching quality on both sides and the thin Hanshin order, so I'm on the low total.
