Köln's 5-0 cup win over Union five days earlier is the loudest fact around this rematch, but it was not five goals' worth of repeatable football. It was level for half an hour, Union actually led the shot count, and the last two goals came after Union were three down and had made attacking changes. Both sides now arrive without a true box striker. The real question is whether Union return to the compact side they have been in the league.

Union under Lustrinelli are at their best without the ball. They had 37 percent in the goalless draw with Dortmund and 43 percent in the win over Elversberg, and looked far worse as the ball-carrying side in the 1-3 against Schalke. Their last three league games all stood goalless at half-time. Köln create through carriers rather than a target man: El Mala, Maina, Krauß winning the ball and Bülter linking. Without Dallinga and Ache they scored two against Gladbach and none at Frankfurt or against Schalke.

El Mala against Haberer, van den Bosch and the cover around them is the deciding duel. He beat van den Bosch one-on-one in the cup, and he can do it again, but compactness can cut how often he gets the chance. Krauß's regains against Union's midfield passing are the other live route, since the first cup goal came from a turnover. Union's own best hope of a goal is a dead ball or a late push, and most of their expected goals in recent league games have arrived after the break.

The absences shape the whole picture. Köln have officially confirmed that the match comes too early for Ache, with Dallinga, Rondic, Skhiri, van den Berg and Hübers also out. Union lose Uduokhai to suspension, plus Markgraf, Nsoki and Ilic, which leaves Latte Lath or Gray to lead a line that managed 1, 0 and 4 shots on target in its last three. Imeri is the one upgrade available.

The keepers push the same way. Schwäbe has saved 11 of 12 in his last three games, and Rønnow, likely back after Raab played the cup, saved 8 of 9 in the league.

This should be cagey for the first hour, with Köln holding slightly more of the ball and Union in a tighter block than in the cup. A draw would be no disaster for either side, which also suits a careful start. The first goal matters most, and a narrow Köln win, their cleanest route, still fits this picture.

That's why I'm siding with a low-scoring game: two blunted attacks, two keepers in form and a home side with every reason to stay in shape.
