Game 1 of this Central League first stage looks like a low-scoring starters' game at Tokyo Dome. Both Inoue and Higashi have dominated these exact lineups on very little traffic, so neither offence is at its best here. The difference sits in how each starter arrives: one is in sharp, steady form, the other comes off a heavier September and a long layoff. If the first six innings go to the steadier arm, a one-run game decided late is the most likely shape.

The structure is simple. The Giants win by preventing runs and score in small doses: 2.8 runs per game over their last ten, with seven of those games at two runs or fewer. DeNA win with power, leading the league in runs and tied for the lead in home runs, and Maki and Tsutsugo have hit 41 between them since July. Both teams have been off for about a week, so both bullpens come in fully rested.

The key matchup is Inoue against DeNA's middle order. In 47 innings against them this season he has allowed 22 hits, 7 walks and a single home run. Maki is 0-for-13 against him and Tsutsugo 0-for-7. That is suppression built on keeping men off base, not on stranding them, and he showed it again with six one-hit innings against this lineup in their last meeting. His one exposure is the long ball at the Dome, and he has said himself that he will pitch with it in mind.

Higashi has also handled the Giants, allowing four runs in 27 innings. But his September looked different: 32 hits and 10 walks in a little over 31 innings, a much heavier load than his season norm. His last start ran to a season-high 119 pitches, and this game comes 12 days later. His weaker side is right-handed hitting, which has produced 11 of the 12 homers he has allowed.

That is where the lineup news matters. Sakamoto and Dalbec were declared fit by the acting manager, and Matsumoto finished every drill; he is reported 6-for-12 against Higashi. Those are the right-handed bats that attack Higashi's weak split. Rookie Urata remains out, which mostly costs the Giants late-game bench options.

The flow I expect: quiet early innings, with Higashi's first frames after the layoff the first place it can turn. The third time through the order is the danger zone for both, then two fresh bullpens settle a tight finish.

The market leans on the Giants' poor record against DeNA since August and their thin lineup. Part of that record was built in games Inoue did not start, while he went 5-1 against DeNA himself. With the better-form starter on the mound and the right-handed bats back for Higashi's weaker side, I think the home side is underrated. That's why I'm siding with the Giants to win this one.
