Eleven Virtual pick Lost

Two J1 matches where the shape is set by one side's limits. Verdy arrive with the league's weakest attack and without their starting centre-forward, while Marinos defend well but struggle to break a compact block. In Nagasaki, a home press meets a leader whose goals come after half-time, off the bench, against legs that are tiring. In both, the decisive half of the matchup is clear before kick-off.

Marinos v Verdy. Marinos under Corica have conceded 9 in 10 league games and kept clean sheets in their last two, but those were 0-0 draws with only one or two shots on target each time, and Corica himself names chance creation as the problem. Verdy have 4 goals in 10 league games and never more than one in a match. Under new coach Soma they switched to a direct 4-4-2 of long balls to the strikers, and in the only full eleven-v-eleven game so far it produced three shots on target and almost no expected goals. Now Someno, the target for that plan, is suspended after his red card, and Yamami and Teranuma are already out, so Verdy's front two will come from bench options.

The way this should flow: Marinos keep the ball against a compact block, a level first half is the most likely state, and if Verdy fade after the break as they did against Hiroshima, Marinos find space for wide players and the bench. Verdy's recent goals all came only after they were already behind, and that late push is the one route to watch. But a blunt direct attack without its main striker, against a back line that rarely concedes, is the most certain fact in this match. Whether Marinos break through or not, I'm siding with Verdy staying off the scoresheet.

Nagasaki v Hiroshima. Hiroshima lead the table by grinding: lots of the ball, very little conceded (eight clean sheets in ten across all competitions), and goals that arrive after half-time when Gaul brings on Haller, Asano, Matsumoto or Kato. Four of their last six league games were level at the break, and three of those still ended in wins by two or more. Nagasaki will press at home, and they were level or ahead at half-time in their last three home league games. But their attack is thin, and their goals have come late while chasing, which is exactly when Hiroshima counter.

The key matchup is Hiroshima's bench against Nagasaki's legs after the hour: Nagasaki have conceded late at Tottori, at Kobe and twice in stoppage time against Gamba. Kyoto pressed Hiroshima high last weekend and got one saved chance before Hiroshima took over and won by three. The absences change little here: Yamasaki and Campbell have been out for weeks, and Maeda is a bench winger. I expect a long, tight opening and then Hiroshima pulling clear in the second half, as they did when they won 3-1 at this ground in February. That's why I'm with Hiroshima to win this one by a clear margin.
