Both of these KOVO Cup matches come down to the same thing at this point in the season: which side kept its deciding unit together and which side is still learning it. KAL Jumbos and Woori carried over their setter links and most of their core. Busan OK and KB Stars rebuilt nearly every key role and have one official match each to show for it. In early cup volleyball that difference tends to show up at the end of tight sets, where errors decide things.

KAL Jumbos against Busan OK. KAL's core is settled: Han Seon-su setting Jeong Ji-seok, the same middles in Kim Gyu-min and Kim Min-jae, and now Ketrzynski as the main scorer. He had 28 points, three blocks and two aces against Samsung. KAL out-blocked Samsung 13 to 8 and won the deuce second set on blocks from Jeong Ji-seok and Han Seon-su. OK has rebuilt by role. Kim Dae-hwan, born in 2005, played his first official match as setter in the opener, Russell is new at opposite, and the outside and one middle are new as well.

The key matchup is Russell's serve against KAL's reception. That serve won OK two sets off Hyundai with runs of 7-2 and 17-7, and it is the one real route for OK. The other matchup is how sets end. OK's coach said himself that errors rise after 20 points, and OK lost both close sets against Hyundai at the death: from 20-20 on attack errors, and in the fifth from 7-7 on a missed serve and a net touch. Against a settled KAL block, that habit matters. OK also got through five sets with only ten players.

Nobody is missing on either side, and everyone named played the day before. KAL has a shorter turnaround, so the first set is the most open. The likely shape is that OK takes a set on serve and then can't close a second tight one. That's why I'm siding with KAL to win by a clear margin.

KB Stars against Woori. The level market treats these as two rebuilt teams, but they were not rebuilt the same way. Woori kept coach Park Chul-woo, the Han Tae-jun to Araujo link for a second season, libero Kim Young-jun and its domestic outsides. KB changed its coach only fifteen days ago, plus its foreign opposite, its Asia-quota outside and its libero, and setter Hwang Taek-eui is back from ankle surgery.

KB's first match together showed what a new unit looks like: 18 attack errors from Linus and Hong Sang-hyuk, and a reception line that Kepco's serve broke in the first set. Woori serves aggressively, and Araujo is a real threat from the line, so the matchup is Woori's serve against KB's new reception. KB also plays again only a day after a four-set match. Woori has its own question marks: Ali has left, and new middle Martin had barely trained with Han, which is why I'm only backing the winner here and not a margin.

Expect Woori's settled link to hold side-out while KB's error count and tired legs cost it the longer sets. That's why I'm siding with Woori to win the match.
