Two NBA openers where the rosters tell more than the preseason noise. Philadelphia hosts Cleveland in a game that should stay tight and possession-driven, with big-man depth the quiet hinge. Oklahoma City hosts Denver in a game where the home side's settled core meets a visitor starting its season short on wing depth.
Philadelphia against Cleveland: the 76ers beat the Knicks on opening night with Maxey and Embiid carrying heavy minutes, but their frontcourt behind Embiid is empty. Barlow, Fall and Hukporti are all out, and Hukporti is done for the season, so any Embiid foul trouble or rest stretch forces small lineups. Cleveland arrives after nine days off with Harden, Mitchell and Watson creating off the dribble and Mobley as the switchable defender. Allen is questionable, which keeps this close, but Cleveland's missing pieces are mostly bench roles. I'm siding with Cleveland as a thin underdog: the market paid Philadelphia for the opener win and home court, and may be underpricing that missing backup centre.
Oklahoma City against Denver: the Thunder already won their opener at San Antonio, with Gilgeous-Alexander scoring 32 in 36 minutes, and Williams and Holmgren form a healthy core. Denver has Jokic and Murray, and the April meeting went their way, but Strawther is out and Spencer Jones is questionable, leaving the wing rotation unproven in a first game on the road. Jokic against Mara and Hartenstein is the matchup that keeps Denver in it, yet the Thunder's home opener, ball pressure and fuller rotation make them the steadier side. That's why I'm siding with Oklahoma City, paired with Cleveland to make a combination of two independent reads.
