New York's 0-3 start is not just bad luck. The problems show up in the same places every game: a bench that cannot hold its minutes, a half-court offence that has not reached 104 points, and closing windows that keep slipping away. Detroit comes in with the opposite profile. It is deep, it wins the glass, and it has already won on the road without its All-Star centre.

The Knicks lost by 6 at home to Philadelphia, by 4 in Boston and by 9 at home to Orlando. Against Orlando the bench scored 11 while Orlando's reserves scored 37. Drummond was pulled after seven minutes, and the coach openly says the rotation behind the starting five is open. Mitchell Robinson is gone and Alvarado is out, so the second unit has very little to lean on. They also led Orlando by ten with just over nine minutes left and then gave it away with eight fourth-quarter turnovers.

Detroit beat Boston, Miami and Philadelphia and outrebounded all three. The win in Philadelphia came without Duren and without Thompson. An undrafted Jenkins played big minutes there, and Holland and Robinson filled the gaps. The threes have been falling at an unusually high rate, but that isn't the whole story. They shoot just over half on twos and get to the line about 26 times a game, so they have a second way to score when the threes cool off.

The matchup that matters most for New York is Towns on the glass against a Detroit frontcourt without Duren. It is real, and it is the Knicks' clearest way into this game. Detroit's turnover habit is the other door, but New York has forced only 10 to 16 turnovers a game and has not made anyone pay for it yet. Thompson was back at the shootaround, which would put Detroit's best perimeter defender on Brunson again, but this reading does not need him.

I expect the Knicks' starters to keep it competitive early. The game should swing in the second quarter, when Detroit's second unit meets New York's least settled lineup, and again at the start of the second half, which is where Detroit has built its leads. If it stays close late, New York has yet to win a fourth quarter in the regular season.

That's why I'm siding with Detroit to win this one outright on the road.
