The first leg in La Plata finished 0-0, which sounds like nothing happened, but it leaves a very uneven return leg: Flamengo at home are missing the man who usually links their midfield and attack, while Estudiantes come in having conceded to San Lorenzo in the league two days after that draw. My question is whether Flamengo can build through the middle without Arrascaeta against a side whose Libertadores strength has been defending its box.
Flamengo's side first. Our absence list has Giorgian de Arrascaeta (wrist), Ayrton Lucas and Evertton Araujo (both thigh) out. Sports Mole's preview said Jorge Carrascal and Lucas Paquetá had taken on more of the creative load, alternating roles in the derby win over Fluminense. They then won 3-0 at Bahia in the league, so that pairing has had a real test since the first leg. The unbeaten run in our records is 7 wins and 3 draws from the last 10, with 16 scored and 5 conceded.
Estudiantes' side. Sports Mole noted they eliminated Corinthians with a defensive unit that conceded just three shots from inside the box across the tie, and that the quarter-final was won 1-0 away. That is the profile that held Flamengo scoreless in the first leg. But their league form is the opposite: 1-2 at home to San Lorenzo, a 2-2 at Central Córdoba, and 12 conceded in the last 10 matches in our table. Jalil Elias and Gabriel Neves are listed as doubtful with injury flags, which matters for midfield cover.
So the interlock I would watch: Estudiantes' compact box defence against Flamengo's reshuffled creators. If Flamengo's full-backs are also patched, the width that usually stretches a low block may come from different players than in La Plata. A 0-0 first leg also means one early goal changes everything about how Estudiantes have to play, and they have been better at protecting a lead than chasing one.
