This match is a meeting of continuity and novelty. Perth arrive with the same coach, a settled shape and a competitive game just played, while Brisbane open their season with as many as ten debutants and a rebuilt back line that has never played a league game together. Heavy rain is forecast, which pushes the game toward duels, second balls and dead balls rather than slick combination play. The side with the more settled structure should feel more at home in that kind of game.

Brisbane's season starts late. They had a long pre-season, their first-round game was postponed, and the squad has been reshaped from the back to the front: Aldred, King and Russell come into the defence, and Nam, Francois, Ilic and Postolachi are new further up. So last season's numbers tell us little about this group. What does carry over is the coach's identity. Perth's own coach calls Valkanis's team one of the most physical in the league, and intense at home.

Perth, by contrast, already showed us what they are. At Macarthur six days ago their patched back four, already without Kaltak, Dench and Shamoon, held a lead from just before the hour until the closing minutes and allowed only two shots on target while Perth put six on target themselves. They lost only to a retaken penalty and a late free-kick header. Their open-play shape held; their weak spot was dead balls and late pressure.

That sets up the key matchups. Brisbane's clearest route is aerial: corners and free kicks against a Perth line missing its usual aerial centre-back, a route the rain helps. Going the other way, Lawrence and Despotovski running at a brand-new Brisbane back line is exactly the test a first-night defence finds hardest, with offside timing and transition cover still unrehearsed. In midfield, Freney's ball-winning matters more on a heavy pitch than the creativity Brisbane's new signings were bought for.

The new absences sit in Perth's midfield. Nieuwenhof is out and Hore is doubtful, and both played last week, so Perth's bench is thinner for the final half-hour. The defenders Perth are missing were already missing at Macarthur, so that back line is the one they have been playing with, not a new hole.

I expect Brisbane to start physical and win territory early, with Perth absorbing and breaking. A new team in the rain is unlikely to build cleanly, so the first goal probably comes from a set piece or a transition mistake, and a tight, scrappy game is the most natural shape. Brisbane's fresher legs could matter late, but they first have to find a rhythm they have never had together.

That's why I'm siding with Perth Glory. The settled organisation of the away side carries more weight than the unproven quality of the home side on a heavy pitch, and I don't see this new Brisbane group finding enough to beat them.
