[2026 MLS] Portland Timbers vs Colorado Rapids preview and analysis Kick-off: October 18 at 02:30 UTC
Portland Timbers host Colorado Rapids at Providence Park on October 18 at 02:30 UTC. With five regular-season games left in Major League Soccer, the teams are five points apart. Colorado occupy ninth place, the final Western Conference playoff spot, while 10th-place Portland have a chance to close the gap against a direct rival.
1. Match overview and team form
In the data center standings on October 16, Colorado Rapids had 38 points from 29 games, while Portland Timbers had 33 from the same number of matches. A Portland win would cut the gap to two points; a defeat would stretch it to eight. Portland are level on points with Real Salt Lake and San Diego FC, and four of their five remaining opponents are above the playoff line. That makes this home meeting especially important.
Category Western Conference position and points: Portland Timbers, 10th, 33 / Colorado Rapids, ninth, 38 Season goals for and against: Portland Timbers, 51 and 56 / Colorado Rapids, 41 and 41 Last 10 games: Portland Timbers, 2 wins, 3 draws, 5 losses / Colorado Rapids, 3 wins, 4 draws, 3 losses Current winless runs: Portland Timbers, 6 games / Colorado Rapids, 4 games
Portland's six-game winless run has not been down to a silent attack throughout. Away to Sporting Kansas City, they scored twice with wide runs and cutbacks, then added a penalty, but let a two-goal lead slip in a 3-3 draw. Against Atlanta United at home, they had 21 shots and 2.3 expected goals but lost 1-0. Their last five games have produced five goals and conceded 11. They have alternated between failing to convert chances and giving up early goals or struggling defensively after the break. They have conceded in 18 consecutive league games.
Colorado Rapids have scored first in each of their last four games but have not won any of them. They led Seattle Sounders 3-1 before conceding twice. Away to LA Galaxy, they went in 2-0 up at half-time, then lost 3-2 after an own goal, a goalkeeper passing error and a corner conceded. Against Minnesota United, a turnover from a pass and another own goal also led to goals against. After the Seattle game, head coach Matt Wells said his players stopped running and pressing when they had the lead and dropped too deep. Their recent problem has been managing games after scoring first, rather than getting the opener.
The home and away records appear to favor Portland. They have scored 24 goals in their last 10 home games, winning five, drawing two and losing three. Colorado have managed only five goals in their last eight away games, with one win, one draw and six losses. Still, Portland's 10-match home sample spans three head coaches. In Marti Cifuentes' five home games since taking over in July, they have two wins, one draw and two losses, with 11 goals scored and 10 conceded. Five of Colorado's eight away games came in May, and since Morgan Whittaker made his first squad on September 13, their only away match was at LA Galaxy. Colorado scored twice in the first half there. The old away scoring trend may not carry over to their current attack.
Colorado have seen more changes to their squad. According to the official Major League Soccer availability report, Portland will be without defenders Alex Bonetig, Brandon Bye, Finn Surman, Juan Mosquera and Jack McGraw. They have already played their two October games with a different back line, so these are not new absences. Colorado will miss Jack Steffen, Reggie Cannon and others, while Sayed Abu Farqui is suspended. Nico Hansen, who has recently been in goal, is a doubt.
Position Defence: Portland are likely to keep the back line from their last two games / Colorado are without Cannon, with Keegan Rosenberry a possible option at right-back Goalkeeper: James Pantemis is expected to start for Portland / Hansen is a doubt for Colorado, with Adam Beaudry likely to play if he is out Attack: Antony and Cole Bassett could be available for Portland / Abu Farqui is suspended for Colorado, with Darren Yapi or Ibrahim Sadiq options up front
If Hansen cannot play while Steffen remains out, Beaudry is likely to start in goal. He has made only two league appearances this season. Even if Hansen does play, the impact of his hip injury will only become clear during the match. On the right, Rosenberry could take Cannon's place after setting up Yapi's opener against Minnesota United. If Antony and Bassett return, Portland will have more attacking options off the bench. Their availability is a possibility, not confirmation that either will start.
The head-to-head record at Providence Park also favors the hosts. Colorado have lost five straight there to Portland. Those matches all came before Cifuentes took over, though, and Colorado won the most recent meeting, 2-0 at home in February. Portland were then managed by Phil Neville. The previous home record alone does not tell us much about the current matchup between the two coaches.
Both teams played on October 14 local time and have had three days of rest. Portland return home after three straight away games, while Colorado travel after two consecutive home matches. Rain and strong winds are not forecast at kick-off. Starting lineups and in-game substitutions are more likely to shape the contest than the schedule or weather.
2. Matchup analysis
The space behind Portland's defence is the first area Colorado can target. Away to LA Galaxy, Colorado went 2-0 up in the first half through Donovan Phillip, who ran onto a through ball from Josh Atencio, and Paxten Aaronson, who met a long pass from Rob Holding. Portland conceded an opener to a ball over the top against FC Dallas, and their high defensive line was blamed for a goal against San Jose Earthquakes. With Phillip, Aaronson, Atencio and Holding available, those runs could matter again when Portland have the ball and push their line forward.
Colorado are not certain to focus on counterattacks, though. They have had plenty of possession in recent games, including away to LA Galaxy. Wells could add defensive cover and send the ball forward quickly to attack the space behind Portland's defence. If Colorado build from the back with short passes instead, a back line that could include a new goalkeeper and right-back will have to deal with Portland's forwards. Colorado conceded after Hansen gave the ball away against LA Galaxy and Whittaker did the same against Minnesota United. Portland's Kristoffer Velde has also intercepted a pass to set up a David da Costa goal against LAFC. Those moments are no guarantee of a repeat, but Wells' choice of how to build from the back could shape chances for both sides.
Portland's left-sided attack will test Colorado's reshuffled right flank. Against Sporting Kansas City, Jímer Fory got to the left byline and cut the ball back for a Christian Lassiter goal. Lassiter also beat a defender in the same game before setting up da Costa. If Rosenberry starts in place of Cannon, he will have to deal with Fory and Lassiter on that side. Rosenberry did, though, deliver the cross for Colorado's opener in their previous match. If Portland push Fory forward on the left, Whittaker could find space behind him at the other end. Both teams have players who can make use of this flank.
Portland also have set pieces to turn to if their wide attacks are contained. In the four home games with confirmed scoring details, two of their eight goals came from Velde direct free kicks and two from penalties. Bassett's return would give them another option in the box and on free kicks. Against Columbus Crew, a corner led to a save by the defence and goalkeeper before the rebound resulted in a goal for the opposition. Beaudry's limited appearances do not let us predict the same mistake today. If Colorado change goalkeepers, though, their set-piece defence will be a less familiar combination facing Portland's free kicks.
Portland also need to be wary of Colorado's set pieces. Colorado have scored from a Whittaker corner, and in February's meeting they scored with a header at the far post from a corner. Portland recently conceded a header from a free kick against LA Galaxy. Whichever team has the edge in open play, one set piece could change the score. Abu Farqui's suspension also changes Colorado's central striker options and could affect how they finish crosses from wide areas. Yapi scored against Minnesota United by shooting first time from Rosenberry's cross, but was substituted with pain during that match. He is not listed on the official availability report, so he could play, though his starting role and minutes remain unclear.
The teams could show different weaknesses early and late in the game. Portland have conceded first at home in the first minute against St. Louis City, in the 25th against Austin FC and in the 28th against Atlanta United. Colorado have scored first in all four of their recent games. But they have not won any of them. From the time Portland add attackers around the 60th minute, Colorado's ability to hold a lead and defend their back line will come into focus. Portland also let a two-goal lead slip in the second half against Sporting Kansas City, so scoring first would not guarantee either team a win.
If the game is level at half-time, the coaches' decisions could open up space. Portland have good reason to add attackers as they look to close the points gap, and Wells has also shown he will bring on an attacker for a defender, as he did when Colorado were level at 1-1 against Minnesota United. The longer Portland press, the more chances Phillip and Aaronson could get to run in behind. If Colorado score first, the question will be how long they can keep out Portland's free kicks and left-sided attack. If Portland take the lead, Colorado's runs from midfield and set pieces will keep testing the hosts' defence.
3. Final view and prediction
We expect Portland to come from behind in the second half even if Colorado score first before the break. Phillip and Aaronson can run in behind Portland's defence, and the hosts have conceded early in recent home games. But Colorado have failed to turn an opener into a win in each of their last four matches. As Portland bring on more attacking options after the break, Lassiter and Fory's work down the left and Velde's free kicks will test Colorado's reshuffled right side and their goalkeeping situation. Colorado have forwards who can score late, too, so we rate a Portland clean sheet as unlikely.
The market favors Portland based on their home form and Colorado's poor away record. We also lean toward the hosts, but Portland's home sample includes games under previous coaches, and many of Colorado's low-scoring away games came before Whittaker joined. Colorado's issues defending leads, the goalkeeper decision for this match and both teams' set-piece threats lead us to rate both teams scoring as more likely than the market does.
Our score prediction is 3-2 or 3-1 to Portland Timbers. Colorado could score first with a run in behind or a cross from the wing, then Portland could equalize and go ahead through second-half substitutions, left-sided attacks and set pieces. If Hansen plays without his injury affecting him and Colorado add defenders before continuing to threaten on the break, the visitors could hold on to their lead. The home win prediction would also fail if Portland's shots and set pieces are kept out throughout.
