[2026-27 French Ligue 1] Troyes AC vs Olympique de Marseille preview and analysis Kick-off: October 11, 18:45 UTC
Troyes AC and Olympique de Marseille meet at the Stade de l'Aube in Round 6 of Ligue 1 at 18:45 Korea time on October 12. After five rounds, Troyes AC sit 16th and Olympique de Marseille are 17th. Both teams need to end their losing runs, but the pressure is different for promoted Troyes and Marseille, who have fallen short of expectations from the start of the season.
1. Match overview and team form
League after five matches Position and points: Troyes AC 16th, 4 points / Olympique de Marseille 17th, 3 points Record: Troyes AC 1 win, 1 draw, 3 losses / Olympique de Marseille 1 win, 4 losses Goals for and against: Troyes AC 4 scored, 11 conceded / Olympique de Marseille 7 scored, 8 conceded Current league losing streak: Troyes AC 3 matches / Olympique de Marseille 4 matches
Troyes earned promotion after winning Ligue 2 last season. They drew 0-0 with Paris FC and won 2-1 away to Lorient this season, but lost 2-6 to Strasbourg and 0-2 to both Lille and Angers. They have conceded 10 goals in their last three matches and failed to score in their last two. Against Lille and Angers, Troyes spent time attacking in the opposition half without making it count in front of goal. Their 17 shots and 10 corners against Angers produced no goals, highlighting the gap between the volume of attacks and the quality of the chances.
Olympique de Marseille have lost four straight league games after opening with a 4-0 win over Strasbourg in Bruno Genesio's first league match in charge. Including their Europa League defeat away to Beşiktaş, they have lost five competitive matches in a row. Their league losses, though, came against Monaco, Paris FC, Rennes and Paris Saint-Germain, all of whom were in the top six after Round 5. Troyes have also lost their last three against teams in the upper half of the table. Current positions and losing streaks alone do not tell us how these teams compare today.
Marseille have shown problems in their performances, too. According to Goal.com's figures from October 7, they averaged 56.5% possession across five league matches, but their expected goals against of 12.17 was the highest in the league. They have actually conceded eight. There is a gap between their ability to keep the ball and move upfield and their ability to stop opponents after losing possession. Troyes, meanwhile, posted expected goals of 0.38 in both their matches against Paris FC and Lille, according to Data Center. That does not represent their attack across the whole season, but it fits with the way they struggled to turn shots into high-quality chances in those two games.
Marseille's away record is another reason to be cautious about their edge. They have scored four goals in their last eight competitive away games and failed to score in either of their two league away matches this season, against Monaco and Rennes. Five of those eight away games, though, came last season under the previous manager. Three away matches under Genesio are not enough to settle the question of their current attacking form on the road. Troyes are also Marseille's first lower-table opponent away from home this season.
Both sides have important changes to their likely line-ups. Marseille will be without Pierre-Emile Højbjerg because of a thigh injury. Tchoukour Nnadi, who has played 43 minutes this season, is the leading candidate to take over the role of breaking up attacks and playing forward passes. Captain Timothy Weah is suspended after his red card and cannot play at right-back. Ulisses Garcia, primarily a left-back, and Kelyann Bezahaf, who has yet to start a league match, are the alternatives. Striker Amine Gouiri injured his thigh while on international duty, but has completed full training and the coach said he is available. Whether he starts has not been confirmed.
Troyes will be without left-back Anis Ouznadji and full-backs Ismaël Boura and Yvann Titi. Ouznadji has played 424 minutes this season and delivered the cross that started the move for the opening goal against Strasbourg. The expected pairing is L. Maronnier on the right and Noah Donkor on the left. They have played 239 and 129 minutes respectively this season. Winger Merwan Ifnaoui is back in the squad after an injury, though it is unclear whether he will start straight away.
Both coaches are expected to stick with their usual approach. Stephane Dumont's Troyes are likely to press high in a 4-2-3-1 and, if they take the lead, could sit deeper as they did against Lorient. Genesio has said Marseille will stick with their approach of keeping possession and pressing forward despite the losing run. Both teams have had around three weeks off, but Marseille face Olympiacos in the Europa League four days later. Troyes have no midweek match.
Marseille have the better head-to-head record. According to Le Méridional on October 10, Marseille have recorded 11 wins, 6 draws and 3 losses in 20 meetings since 2000. They also won both matches in their most recent meetings, in the 2022-23 season. The managers and squads have since changed, though, so those results offer limited insight into today's attacking patterns or defensive responses.
2. Matchup analysis
Early on, Troyes' high press will meet Marseille's build-up from the back. Troyes pushed into the opposition half from kick-off away to Angers and disrupted their attempts to play the ball into the forwards. Marseille struggled to move the ball forward from the back during the first 20 minutes of their away match against Beşiktaş, when they faced intense pressure. Højbjerg is out today, and his likely replacement, Nnadi, has had limited playing time since returning from injury. If Troyes press as soon as the ball reaches Nnadi or Himad Abdelli, they could have chances to win possession in the middle of Marseille's half.
What Troyes do after winning the ball will be the harder part. Their pressure and shot volume against Angers did not lead to a goal. Against Lille, their direct passes and crosses towards Jérémy Le Douaron were dealt with by the centre-backs, and their open-play expected goals came to just 0.09. An immediate run into the box by Antoine Mille after a turnover in midfield, followed by a close-range shot, could pose more danger than their usual crossing approach. Winning the ball with a press does not guarantee that kind of finish, though.
If Marseille play through the press, the contest will shift into Troyes' defensive half. If Gouiri receives the ball behind an advanced Troyes defensive midfielder, Marseille can move forward quickly down the flanks. Against Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille won the ball and built the attack through Gouiri to score the equaliser. After the Lille match, Dumont pointed to managing the space behind the defence as an issue, so Troyes will need to keep the distance between their pressing players and centre-backs under control.
Marseille's most direct route to goal is an attack down the left. Igor Paixão's availability is uncertain, but Marseille can still put attacking players on the left behind an advancing Emerson Palmieri. Troyes are expected to have Maronnier on the right, the same player who was substituted at half-time against Lille because of his physical condition. Against Angers, Troyes failed to stop a cross from the left and then lost track of Peter at the far post, conceding a header. When Marseille cross from the left, Troyes will need to track the runners arriving at the far post as well as defend the middle.
Troyes can also target the right side of Marseille's defence in Weah's absence. Rennes attacked down that flank in the second half and scored the winner. Garcia or Bezahaf could play at right-back today, while Troyes may look to deliver crosses from that side through H. Picard or Timothé Nkada. Their approach of sending high balls towards Le Douaron had little effect against Lille. Even if Troyes advance down the flank, they will need better cross locations and runs from Mille into the box to improve the quality of their chances.
Set pieces offer Troyes another way to create chances. Of their 0.38 expected goals against Lille, 0.29 came from set pieces, and the goalkeeper saved a close-range Le Douaron header at the near post against Angers. Marseille also conceded from a corner against Beşiktaş, although Naïf Aguerd, a regular in the league, did not start that match. Troyes may win corners today, but there is little reason to assume the same defensive mistake will happen again.
The first goal could change the way both teams approach the match. If Troyes score first, they could sit in a defensive block as they did against Lorient and make Marseille spend more time attacking. Marseille have yet to score away from home in the league this season. If Marseille take the lead, Troyes will have to push forward. They conceded first against Lille and Angers, failed to score and then conceded again, and their full-back positions are likely to be filled by back-up options today. That does not mean Marseille will be able to see the game out comfortably if they go ahead. Genesio has acknowledged that his team's shape and performance can deteriorate as matches progress. Troyes could get a chance to pull one back with a corner or by bringing on Ifnaoui.
3. Final assessment and conclusion
Our score prediction is 1-2 or 0-2, with Troyes at home. Even if Troyes trouble Marseille's midfield with an early press, we expect Marseille to play through it and find Gouiri and their left flank. If Marseille score first and Troyes push forward, Marseille should get further chances to attack. Marseille's defensive shape could loosen in the second half, giving Troyes a chance to pull one back from a corner for a 1-2 finish. If Aguerd and Conrad Jaden Egan-Riley deal with the aerial balls aimed at Le Douaron, Marseille could win 0-2.
The difference in finishing between the teams informs our view. Troyes have failed to turn recent turnovers from pressing into goals, while Marseille have Gouiri to finish chances after attacks down the flanks. Troyes' gaps at full-back line up directly with Marseille's left-side attack, and Troyes conceded again after falling behind in both of their last two matches. Marseille's away scoring record and second-half defensive issues point to a narrow win rather than a larger margin.
The market also makes Marseille favourites, citing the team news and Troyes' goals conceded. We agree on the likely result, though today's key factors are the players stepping in for the regulars. Troyes can target Nnadi with their press, while Marseille can attack Maronnier down the left. Those matchups pull in opposite directions, but Marseille look a little more likely to turn their shots into goals. Our view would change if Troyes repeatedly win the ball from Nnadi and Abdelli early on, or score first from a set piece. Marseille would then have to solve the same away scoring problem they have faced this season against a Troyes side sitting deeper.
