[2026–27 Dutch Eredivisie] Feyenoord vs AZ Alkmaar preview and analysis Kick-off: 1:45 a.m. on October 11 (Korea time)
Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar meet at De Kuip in Rotterdam at 1:45 a.m. Korea time on October 11, with the Eredivisie’s top two places at stake in Round 8. Both sides remain unbeaten after the opening weeks. AZ Alkmaar lead the table on 19 points, with Feyenoord second on 17, making this their first head-to-head clash near the top after the international break.
1. Match overview and team form
Feyenoord have won five and drawn two of their seven league games, scoring 25 and conceding 7. AZ Alkmaar have six wins and a draw, with 18 goals scored and 6 conceded. The official Eredivisie website lists Feyenoord as the league’s top scorers. AZ Alkmaar have conceded the fewest goals and faced the fewest shots, with 57, and shots on target, with 16. Feyenoord rank just behind them in both shots faced and shots on target. Assigning one team the attacking edge and the other the defensive edge does not fully reflect the numbers.
League record this season Record: Feyenoord 5 wins, 2 draws / AZ Alkmaar 6 wins, 1 draw Goals scored and conceded: Feyenoord 25 and 7 / AZ Alkmaar 18 and 6 Shots faced and shots on target faced: Feyenoord 65 and 20 / AZ Alkmaar 57 and 16
We should be cautious about the standard of opposition behind those records. In the current table, the highest-placed league opponent Feyenoord have faced is ninth-placed Go Ahead Eagles. Twelve of their 25 goals came against 16th-placed PEC Zwolle and 15th-placed Utrecht. AZ Alkmaar’s highest-placed opponent is sixth-placed Fortuna Sittard, and their other six opponents are ninth or lower. Neither side has faced a team currently placed higher than those opponents in the league this season.
Feyenoord made a clear tactical change in their 7-0 and 5-0 wins just before the break. Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought Oussama Targhalline into midfield at half-time against Barcelona and moved Luciano Valente to the left. They then faced PEC Zwolle and Utrecht with Valente moving inside to join the passing combinations and Marcos López providing width. On the right, Read’s forward runs and Anis Hadj Moussa cutting inside led to a run of goals. PEC Zwolle struggled to play through Feyenoord’s press, while Utrecht defended man to man. Whether AZ Alkmaar will defend the same way is another matter.
AZ Alkmaar have been at their best when opponents push forward. They scored four away to Utrecht and five against Go Ahead Eagles. When Ro-Zangelo Daal cuts in from the left and full-back Mateo Chávez advances, opponents have to deal with both Daal’s shots and Chávez’s crosses. By contrast, AZ scored only once against deep-lying Willem II and Telstar. That makes it hard to read their two goals in the last three competitive matches as a simple loss of attacking form. Feyenoord are expected to press and play on the front foot at home.
The biggest confirmed change to AZ Alkmaar’s starting line-up is Kees Smit’s absence. The club said he picked up an injury during the international break and will be out for several weeks. Smit linked play and switched the direction of attacks from an advanced midfield position, often under pressure. His likely replacement, Wouter Goes, has set up two goals for Mexx Meerdink with forward passes in 129 minutes this season. His passing is established, but we have yet to see whether he can provide Smit’s link-up role against a strong press. Meerdink returned with some minor calf discomfort, but has resumed training and is expected to start.
Feyenoord may not settle on their centre-back pairing until matchday. Van Bronckhorst said he will make a late decision on Tsuyoshi Watanabe, who has started all seven league matches this season. Jeremiah St. Juste is also reported to be a doubt. If Watanabe is unavailable, Feyenoord could use Thijs Kraaijeveld at centre-back, or move López into the middle and play Javi López at left-back. The second option would also change López’s role as the left-sided player who provides width behind Valente. Substitute forward Shaqueel van Persie is confirmed out.
The sides drew 1-1 in Rotterdam last May. AZ Alkmaar, then managed by Echteld, took the lead after 51 seconds and had 60% possession, but lost the ball just after half-time and conceded an equaliser to Hadj Moussa. That match showed AZ can have the ball here, and that Feyenoord can score when they win it back. But Feyenoord had a different manager and midfield then. The current pressing approach and player roles offer a more direct guide than the longer history of this Rotterdam fixture.
2. Match-up analysis
The key battle is Feyenoord’s first press against an AZ Alkmaar build-up without Smit. Feyenoord worked on their press and the team’s collective movement across the pitch during the international break. If AZ play out from goalkeeper Jari De Busser and their centre-backs into midfield, Feyenoord can close off passing lanes from the front and push Gjivai Zechiël up towards the holding midfielder. If AZ lose the ball in their own half, Paixão and Hadj Moussa can attack from close range. Feyenoord’s equaliser in last May’s meeting also came immediately after AZ gave the ball away.
If AZ play through the press, Feyenoord’s forward movement can create chances for the visitors. Away to Sunderland, AZ struggled to build under a strong first-half press, then made several advances after the break with quicker passing and positional rotations. That showed Echteld can adjust during a match. If Goes receives the ball in midfield and plays forward to Meerdink, or if Daal gets the ball behind Read when he has pushed high, Feyenoord’s centre-backs will have to respond. Smit’s absence may make it harder for AZ to beat the press, but the danger remains if they get through it.
On the right, Hadj Moussa and Read’s choices will interact with Chávez and Daal on AZ’s left. Read set up three goals with low crosses against PEC Zwolle, while Hadj Moussa cut in from the right to score twice against Utrecht. If Chávez advances with Daal, AZ’s left side becomes more dangerous, but a turnover could leave space behind him for Hadj Moussa. If Chávez stays back, he can help limit Hadj Moussa’s space, but Daal will have less support. Read can also leave space for Daal to attack if he loses the ball after pushing high. What matters is how quickly teammates cover behind the full-backs when possession changes, not simply whether they advance.
Feyenoord’s opposite flank is more dependent on the starting line-up. When Valente moves inside, López needs to provide width on the left to preserve the central passing combinations with Zechiël. If López moves to centre-back because Watanabe is out, Javi López would take on that role. Valente may then need to stay wider, changing how Feyenoord defend against AZ right-back Elijah Dijkstra and the right winger. Even if Watanabe plays, Feyenoord remain vulnerable when they lose the ball while pushing forward. They conceded after losing possession in attack against ADO Den Haag, and against Barcelona they failed to stop a pass through the centre as they advanced.
How both teams manage a lead could shape the second half. Feyenoord failed to protect a 2-0 half-time lead against Go Ahead Eagles, and Van Bronckhorst has pointed to periods when energy and concentration drop after going ahead. AZ conceded an 81st-minute equaliser against Willem II immediately after losing the ball in midfield while leading 1-0. Both sides have shown a route back into the game for their opponents, whichever team scores first. Feyenoord brought on forwards to retake the lead after NEC Nijmegen equalised at 1-1, while AZ came from 2-1 down to beat Heerenveen 3-2 after a half-time substitution. The first-half pressing battle alone will not tell us how the match finishes.
The value of a draw in the table could also affect late decisions. A draw would leave AZ Alkmaar top on 20 points, while Feyenoord would have 18 and remain below PSV. Van Bronckhorst has previously added forwards when level, so we expect the home side to push further forward late on. That would create more shooting chances for Feyenoord and more counter-attacking space for AZ. Both teams have European fixtures after this match, but there is no evidence they will rest their first-choice players. The busy schedule is more likely to affect late substitutions than the starting line-ups.
Rain is forecast in Rotterdam around kick-off, with gusty winds expected later in the second half. If the forecast holds, a wet pitch could make first touches more difficult under pressure, while the wind could reduce the accuracy of long passes and high crosses. That could affect both AZ’s option of playing long to Meerdink to escape the press and Feyenoord’s attempts to play through balls behind the defence. We will need to see the actual conditions during the match, so the weather alone does not tell us whose attack will work.
3. Final view and prediction
Our score prediction is Feyenoord 2-2 AZ Alkmaar. We expect Feyenoord to press early, win the ball in AZ’s half and take the lead. AZ’s midfield link-up without Smit is a key point under that pressure. But if Feyenoord lose the ball in midfield after going ahead, Daal and Meerdink can attack behind their advancing defence and level the score. If it is still level late in the second half, Feyenoord need the three points more and are likely to commit more players forward. We expect both teams to score once more in that phase.
The market leans towards a home win, pointing to Feyenoord’s league-leading goal tally, home advantage and the 7-0 and 5-0 wins just before the break. Feyenoord’s consistent chance creation supports that view. Those big wins, though, came against lower-ranked sides that either struggled to play through the press or defended man to man. AZ can defend compactly and use Daal and Meerdink when opponents advance. Both teams have let leads slip, and Feyenoord’s centre-back pairing remains uncertain, so we are not convinced that home control will translate into a win.
This prediction depends on the team that scores first being unable to protect its lead. If Watanabe and St. Juste both play, and Feyenoord maintain their pressing intensity after scoring to force AZ’s counters to start deep in their own half, the visitors’ route to an equaliser becomes weaker. In that case, Feyenoord would be more likely to win than our 2-2 prediction suggests.
