[2026 Japan Emperor’s Cup] Urawa Reds vs RB Omiya Ardija: Match Preview Kick-off: October 7, 18:00 (Korea time)

Urawa Reds and RB Omiya Ardija meet at NACK5 Stadium Omiya at 18:00 on October 7 in the third round of the Emperor’s Cup. It is the first competitive Saitama derby in nine years. Urawa Reds are listed as the home team, but the match will be played at RB Omiya Ardija’s sold-out home ground. Both sides have league games three days later, so their starting line-ups will matter as much as the tactical battle.

1. Match overview and team form

Urawa Reds sit eighth in the new J1 League season with four wins and four defeats from eight matches. They conceded 11 goals during their opening three-game losing streak, then won four and lost one of their next five league games. Head coach Cho Kwi-jae has adjusted the defensive shape to suit each opponent and added more routes to goal through crosses, set pieces and quick forward play. The recent recovery does not necessarily mean Urawa have become better at protecting leads. Against Avispa Fukuoka and J2 side Kataller Toyama, they scored first but were pegged back and fell behind after conceding twice, before substitute goals helped them win again.

RB Omiya Ardija are unbeaten in J2 League after nine matches, with four wins and five draws. They sit fourth on 17 points as of October 4. Head coach Narcis Pelach sets his side up in a 4-3-3 shape, building from the back and attacking with crosses and short passes inside the penalty area. They have recently used second-half substitutions to come back in matches. Against Fujieda MYFC and Tegevajaro Miyazaki, though, they had plenty of the ball and conceded first just before half-time. The key is whether they can create the same possession and attacking volume against a J1 side.

Last 10 competitive matches Record: Urawa Reds 6 wins, 4 defeats / RB Omiya Ardija 4 wins, 5 draws, 1 defeat Goals: Urawa Reds 22 scored, 20 conceded / RB Omiya Ardija 19 scored, 11 conceded Last match: Urawa Reds beat Kataller Toyama 3-2 on September 29 / RB Omiya Ardija drew 1-1 with Tegevajaro Miyazaki on October 4

The opposition and starting line-ups varied across those 10 matches. Urawa Reds’ record includes Emperor’s Cup games against J1 sides and university teams. RB Omiya Ardija’s unbeaten league run came against J2 opponents, while they lost 3-1 to J3 side Gainare Tottori in the cup with a different line-up from their league team. Recent results alone do not tell us whether Urawa’s defensive issues or RB Omiya Ardija’s attacking threat will show to the same extent today.

The schedule also needs to be considered alongside the line-ups. Urawa Reds return to action eight days after their September 29 match, while RB Omiya Ardija have had only two days to recover after a Kyushu away trip on October 4. Both teams play league matches on October 10. Urawa Reds made wholesale changes for an Emperor’s Cup tie against a university team, but used the same starting 11 as in their previous league match against J2 side Kataller Toyama in their most recent cup game. RB Omiya Ardija have used a different goalkeeper and defensive unit from their league side in both cup matches this season. The effect of the short rest on RB Omiya Ardija will depend on who starts, as well as how much the regulars have left in the second half.

Players Atsushi Inagaki: Current status: injured in the university match on October 3 and unlikely to play / Possible impact: fewer wing-back options for Urawa Reds’ back three Edward Maho: Current status: announced on October 6 that he had left Japan’s U-19 squad due to injury / Possible impact: fewer midfield options off the bench for RB Omiya Ardija Tom Glover: Current status: a regular in the league, but left out of the starting line-up for both cup matches / Possible impact: whether he plays will affect how much Urawa can rely on his recent saves

Danilo Boza has not started either of Urawa Reds’ last two matches since being substituted with a groin injury on September 13. Urawa have won both games with a defence built around Yuta Miyamoto, Kenta Nemoto and Miki Yamane. RB Omiya Ardija used a midfield combination featuring Kodai Nakayama in place of Edward Maho in their last league match, while Hijiri Kato and Ota Yamamoto also returned. Their midfield options are reduced, but they can keep the same starting set-up as in that match.

The head-to-head record offers little help in assessing today’s tactics. The only recent meeting in the data centre was a 2-2 friendly on August 1, before the new season began. Since then, Urawa Reds have come through an opening three-game losing streak and adjusted their pressing and defensive shape, while RB Omiya Ardija have shown how they can change their attack with second-half substitutions. If the score is level after regulation time, extra time and a penalty shoot-out will decide who advances. Both teams have league games three days later, which could also affect their late-match decisions. The forecast on the morning of October 7 calls for clear skies and light winds in Saitama around kick-off.

2. Match-up analysis

The main battle is Urawa Reds’ high press against RB Omiya Ardija’s build-up from the back. Urawa’s Kaito Yasui has said he was told to mark the defensive midfielder almost man-to-man on goal kicks, and to press the centre-backs when the situation calls for it. If RB Omiya Ardija stick to their usual approach and play a short pass from a centre-back into Ken Kato, that link-up will be a pressing target. If Urawa cut out the forward pass, they can attack before the opposing defence gets set again.

RB Omiya Ardija have ways to get through the press. Urawa struggled to defend the wide areas against Sanfrecce Hiroshima when the opposition moved the ball away from the direction of the press. If RB Omiya Ardija advance through Caprini’s ball-carrying or switches of play, they can look for crosses and cutbacks. Four of the nine goals Urawa have conceded in their last six matches started with a wide cross or cutback. Still, RB Omiya Ardija’s high possession numbers in J2 do not guarantee they will get the ball into those areas today. They struggled to build out against Shonan Bellmare’s press in the first half and spent more time attacking in the opposition half only after adjusting their shape and making substitutions at half-time.

When Urawa Reds have the ball, Takuro Kaneko on the right is a key player. He has five assists in the data centre’s player statistics this season and set up headed goals for Matheus Savio with right-wing crosses against Tokyo Verdy and Avispa Fukuoka. RB Omiya Ardija dealt with a series of crosses and corners into the left side of their own penalty area against Fujieda MYFC, but then conceded to another cross from the same side. How Hijiri Kato handles Urawa’s right-sided attack will matter. Urawa have scored eight of their 14 goals in their last six league and cup matches from crosses or set pieces. Along with Kaneko’s deliveries, Kenta Nemoto’s corner-kick header, Matheus Savio’s direct free kick and Kotaro Hayashi’s long throw have all led to goals.

RB Omiya Ardija also need to watch the space behind their defence when they press high. Against Yokohama F. Marinos, Shusaku Nishikawa sent Matheus Savio in behind with a long pass. Urawa’s opening goal against Kataller Toyama also began with one of Nishikawa’s long passes. Urawa can score from these passes and wide attacks without keeping the ball for long. If RB Omiya Ardija beat the press and move forward, Urawa will also have to defend the wide areas. The effectiveness of both sides’ attacking approaches will depend less on which team has more possession and more on whether their passes out from the back can beat the press.

The starting line-ups will make the conditions for this battle clearer. If Tom Glover and the regular league defence start, RB Omiya Ardija can build their first pass with players who usually play together and count on Glover’s shot-stopping. If they use the goalkeeper and defenders from their cup line-ups, there is less reason to expect them to maintain their build-up under Urawa’s press. Urawa’s pressing personnel and right-sided crossing threat will also change if they rotate heavily, though they kept their league starting line-up for their last cup match against J2 opposition.

In the second half, the managers’ substitutions will come into play. Pelach has often brought on several players around the 66th minute, and Genyu Sugimoto and Kauã Jesus have both been involved in recent equalizers. Urawa Reds have conceded after taking the lead when opponents changed their forward line or attacked down the flanks. Cho Kwi-jae has also acknowledged that they were not prepared for the opposition’s changes after scoring first. Urawa, though, turned the Kataller Toyama match around again with substitute goals from Hiroto Komori and Renji Hidano. Even if RB Omiya Ardija come back into the game after the break, pushing forward for an equalizer would leave them needing to defend Urawa’s long passes and substitute forwards.

3. Final assessment and verdict

We give Urawa Reds the better chance of winning. RB Omiya Ardija have used a different goalkeeper and defence from their league side in both cup matches, and this time they face a derby after only two days of rest, followed by a league match three days later in the promotion race. If they continue that selection pattern, Urawa’s man-marking press can target their first pass out from the back. Kaneko’s crosses from the right and Urawa’s set pieces have also produced goals recently, giving Urawa a basis for taking the lead in the first half.

A lead does not guarantee a comfortable win. RB Omiya Ardija have used second-half substitutions to create more combinations inside the penalty area, while Urawa have conceded to attacks down the flanks after going ahead. Even if Urawa lead by two and RB Omiya Ardija bring on forwards after the 60th minute to pull one back, pushing forward for an equalizer could give Urawa’s substitute attackers space behind the defence. That is why we favour a 3-1 win for Urawa, particularly if RB Omiya Ardija use their cup line-up.

The market leans towards Urawa Reds because of the gap between J1 and J2 and Urawa’s longer rest. We agree with that match result, but see the margin differently. If RB Omiya Ardija again start their cup goalkeeper and defence, the matchup between Urawa’s press and their build-up raises the chance of a two-goal win for Urawa. The outlook changes if RB Omiya Ardija start Tom Glover and their regular league defenders. In that case, they could play through the press and use their second-half substitutions to come back, leaving the match level at 2-2 after regulation time.
