Milan's injury list for this derby is concentrated in one zone, and I think that matters more than the headline count. Our availability data has Tomori and Gabbia both out, which takes away the two centre-backs who would normally set the line, and Loftus-Cheek, Saelemaekers and Chukwueze are out as well. So the question I'd ask: can a re-stitched Milan back four stay compact against Inter's wide play, or does the first ball behind the full-backs decide the shape of the whole evening?
Milan first. Losing two centre-backs at once is different from losing one, because there is no partner left to cover for a mistake. It also means the midfield in front has to sit a little deeper to protect them, which cuts the support the attackers get. With Loftus-Cheek out too, the runner who normally links those two zones is gone. The data lists Rabiot, Moreira and Gila as available, so there are options, but they are untested as a group.
Inter's side. Our list shows Pavard, Jones, Stones, Martinez and Luis Henrique marked out as injured, so the visitors are not arriving fresh either. The names suggest the damage is spread through defence and attack rather than in one spot, so I'd watch whether they can still get men forward at pace without exposing themselves on the break.
The mismatch to follow is where the injuries sit. Milan are thin in the centre of the pitch, while Inter's gaps look more spread out. Whether a thin centre or a scattered squad copes better with a derby tempo is hard to call, and I don't think the injury list settles it. The first ten minutes, and how Milan's centre-backs handle the first long ball, should tell us a lot. Availability reflects our records as of the latest update, so lineups may differ.
