Portland arrive in Utah with the better record, but the gap between these teams is narrower than the table suggests. Most of Portland's big points differential comes from one home blowout, and their two road wins were close, both with Morant on the floor. Utah have lost three straight at home, but every one was decided late. This looks like a game shaped by the glass and by Portland's shooting volume, not a mismatch.

Portland win through three-point volume, between 36 and 49 attempts a game, plus rim pressure that earns free throws on the road. They lose when the threes stop falling and they get beaten on the boards. Memphis out-rebounded them 54-45 while they went 12 of 49 from deep, and coach Nori singled out his guards' rebounding afterwards. Utah score through George, Bailey's crashing and a frontcourt that pulled down 53, 49 and 52 rebounds in its last three home games. Their weaknesses are their own turnovers and a leaky perimeter defence.

The key matchup is the glass. Utah's bigs and Bailey go straight at the flaw Portland just showed, and Portland's frontcourt depth behind Clingan is thin, with Williams III already absent from their last box score. On the other end, Portland's volume shooting goes at Utah's worst defensive end. That is a real route for them, but how many go in swings a lot from game to game.

Morant's hamstring injury matters beyond his own minutes. Holiday moves into the starting group, so Portland lose a downhill creator and their best bench handler at once, and their second unit gets clearly weaker. Markkanen is still a question for Utah, but they took San Antonio to overtime without both him and Jackson, so the picture does not hang on him.

I expect Utah to start well at home, since their first quarters have been their best. The second quarter is where Portland's shooting can build a lead while the benches play. After that, it comes down to whether Lillard and Avdija can create late without Morant against a Utah side that keeps grinding on the boards. Utah's home games have all been close down the stretch.

That's why I'm siding with Utah to keep this within reach at home. Portland's road margins have been narrow even at full strength, and this version of Portland is thinner exactly where Utah can push.
