Kyoto's record looks dominant, but most of it was built at home, and the way they usually pull away runs into the one thing Shinshu do well. Kyoto win big on the glass against weak frontcourts, while Shinshu have won or split the rebounding battle in nine of their last ten games. That leaves Kyoto needing Shinshu's turnovers to build a margin. Shinshu lose often, but they mostly lose close.
Eight of Kyoto's last ten games came at home, and their points differential includes one 45-point blowout. On the road they have only two games. Shinshu sit near the bottom of the table, yet six of their eight losses came by seven points or fewer. The two heavy defeats both came on nights with around twenty turnovers.
The key matchups: Jackson and Caloiaro on the boards against Shinshu's Lee, which I expect to be close to even here. Then ball security: Shinshu give the ball away more than they take it, and that is Kyoto's clearest route to a lead. In their better recent games Shinshu kept their turnovers around twelve or thirteen, which keeps that gap to a few possessions.
Kyoto are without Reo Shibuta, a starting shooter, after the club confirmed a hamstring strain. Kishimoto moves into the starting lineup and the guard rotation gets thinner. Kyoto's coach has also said he wants to spread minutes and does not expect to pull away easily. Shinshu's core of Harris, Lee, Daum and Donley all played their last game.
I expect an even first half, with Kyoto trying to build a lead in the third quarter. If Shinshu keep their turnovers in check, the game stays within a couple of possessions and their free throws and bench keep it there. That's why I'm siding with Shinshu at home to keep this close.
