Game 1 was closer than the series score suggests, and this one comes down to who gets the better of the pitching duel. Michael King has the October track record and Logan Henderson is making his playoff debut. San Diego left twelve men on base in the opener and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, so I read that loss as sequencing, not as being outplayed.
Milwaukee are the better team on paper: 102 wins, first in the NL Central, and they have won nine of their last ten. Henderson has been excellent too, a 2.47 ERA and no start this year with more than three runs allowed. I respect all of that, and it is why this is a narrow call and not a strong one.
What tips it for me is the other side of the ledger. King threw seven scoreless innings against the Cubs on 97 pitches and now comes back on normal rest. The Padres lineup came into the series swinging well, hitting .276 with 11 homers over its last ten games, while the Brewers hit .243 and struck out 101 times in the same stretch. Both bullpens have similar recent workloads, so neither side has a clear rested edge late.
The Brewers' home price already carries their record, home field and the Game 1 result, and it has barely moved. I am not following any line movement here. I simply think the Padres are a little better than that price gives them credit for, mainly because of the starter matchup and the way Game 1 slipped away.
