Both of these games come down to how narrow the margins and the scoring really are. Game 3 of the World Series is a low-scoring, walk-and-mistake series in which Tampa Bay's offence has not found a way to pull away from this Milwaukee staff. In Miami, both teams' real regular-season games have landed in a tight scoring band, and the matchup takes away the usual ways those games get stretched. In both, the posted picture asks for more than the boxes have shown.

Rays vs Brewers. Milwaukee wins by getting men on base and applying pressure, not by power: 43 walks against 11 home runs over their last 10 games, and 3 or more runs in 9 of those 10, against the Dodgers, Padres and Rays staffs. Tampa Bay's offence is thin, at .236 with 22 walks against 79 strikeouts over 10 games, and it scored 2 and 4 in the first two games of this series.

The key matchups: Freddy Peralta has been excellent at home, but he walks people and rarely goes past six innings, which hands the middle innings to a Rays bridge that has looked shaky (Seymour, Kelly, Wells). Against a left-hander in Robert Gasser, Tampa Bay's projected lineup adds right-handed platoon bats who have hit poorly. Gasser's eleven days off are the real early question, and Milwaukee's top relievers Ashby and Uribe are not fully fresh, but Megill is rested. All absences on both sides are long-term injured players who missed the first two games too.

Expect a 1-1 or 2-1 type game through five, with the margin decided in innings five to seven. A Rays walk-off can only win by one, and a Rays lead after the top of the ninth ends the game, so the home side's winning margin is capped by the structure. For Tampa Bay to win clearly, they need around five runs, above their level against this staff, or Milwaukee held under its floor. That's why I'm siding with Milwaukee with the points.

Heat vs Mavericks. Miami's three real games finished at 237, 239 and 225 combined, and Dallas's at 238, 226 and 228. Miami's cold shooting and its opponents' hot shooting cancel out rather than add up. Dallas only takes 28 to 37 threes, so Miami's leaky perimeter costs less than it did against Minnesota or Detroit. Miami forces only 7 to 9 steals, so Dallas's turnover-fuelled shootouts are less likely, and Dallas has allowed only 8, 16 and 25 free throws, which caps Giannis at the line.

Naji Marshall is newly out for Dallas, taking a secondary handler away. Kyrie Irving returns and Cooper Flagg is probable, which puts Dallas back near its full-roster level of about 115, not above it. Miami at its normal shooting adds up to a game around 230. The higher number on offer looks built on preseason scoring. That's why I'm on the low-scoring side in Miami.
