Kashiwa's league games are wild because league opponents take the ball off them and run into their transitions. Daejeon in this competition do the opposite: they sit, give the ball away and wait. When a possession side meets a compact away block, the open spaces that make Kashiwa's games high-scoring at both ends mostly disappear. Expect long spells of Kashiwa possession against a set shape, not an end-to-end game.

The numbers back this up. In the league, Kashima, Urawa and Tokyo all had more than half the ball against Kashiwa, and Kashiwa scored on the break while allowing 19 to 24 shots. In this competition, the sides who sat deep held Kashiwa to a goalless draw at Ratchaburi and a single goal at Jeonbuk, even with 63% of the ball. The five-goal night came against Port, by far the weakest defence in the group.

Daejeon away from home here have been tight: one shot allowed to Kyoto, nine at Shanghai Port with only 37% of the ball, ten against Kobe. Their own attack makes volume without much quality, and none of their three games in this competition has had more than two goals.

The key matchup is Kashiwa's wide carriers on the left against Daejeon's back four, with a five-man midfield banked in front of it. At Ratchaburi that same problem gave Kashiwa 14 shots but only 2 on target. On the other side, Daejeon's counters and late bench forwards run into a Kashiwa rest-defence that has allowed only 3, 7 and 13 shots in this competition.

The absences change nothing. Kashiwa's doubtful players weren't in the recent line-ups anyway. Diogo has been playing for Daejeon despite an old flag, and their back four already reflects Lee Jung-taek's injury. Both clubs split their squads between league and continental duty, so the rotated groups that built these rows are the kind of side expected here. Both teams are only three days off a league game, and both coaches have spoken about tired legs.

I expect a patient first half with Kashiwa probing and Daejeon breaking down the right, then a slightly more open final half hour once the benches come on. Even when Daejeon have fallen behind in this competition, they have not opened up: at Port they equalised within five minutes and the game stayed tight. That's why I'm siding with a low-scoring game.
