Eczacibasi are the stronger side on paper, with more depth and more firepower, but this Istanbul derby is less about who wins than about how long it lasts. Besiktas lose a lot this season, but they almost never lose quickly. Eczacibasi, meanwhile, have shown a habit of easing off after strong starts against organised opponents. So the real question is whether Besiktas can take one of the sets where Eczacibasi have dipped before.
The structure is clear. Eczacibasi swept Aras Kargo, Ilbank and Manisa, but every loss in their recent run came against Vakifbank or Fenerbahce. In both of those games they led early and then dropped three straight sets. Besiktas sit ninth, yet they have taken at least one set in each of their last ten matches. Four of those went the full five, and the list includes Vakifbank twice, Fenerbahce at home, where they won the first two sets, and Eczacibasi themselves in a September friendly that went to five.
The key matchup is Eczacibasi's attack, with Antropova at opposite and Karakurt and Ishikawa on the wings, against the Besiktas block and floor defence. That defence has kept sets close against attacks of this level. The other thread is the setter. Eczacibasi started Elif Sahin on the most recent matchday after their late fades, and she has one clean win behind her, though even Manisa pushed the first set to extra points.
On absences, Eczacibasi are without new middle Karmen Aksoy, but they already played their last match without her. Rettke and Ezel Balik held the middle in that win, so nothing changes there. Both teams have the same rest, and as a derby there is no travel.
The first set is Eczacibasi's window. Besiktas have started badly at home against Kuzey Boru and Goztepe, so an early lead for the visitors would not surprise me. The turning point should come after that lead, in set two or three, which is where Besiktas have found a set in most of their defeats and where Eczacibasi have let matches slip against teams that keep fighting.
Besiktas do not need to win the close finishes or a decider here. They need one set, and they have found one against everyone lately. That's why I expect this one to run beyond three sets.
