Two matches where the defensive side of the ledger is the story. Both home teams have been giving up chances at a steady rate, and both visitors have a real route to at least one goal. The shape of each game points to goals at both ends rather than a controlled result.
Gamba Osaka against Buriram: Gamba play open, high-event football. In their last ten they scored about two a game and conceded in nine of them, and most of those games finished with several goals. Shot volume is level, around thirteen each way across seven games, so Buriram do get chances. Buriram have scored in eight of their last ten, mostly in Thai domestic games, and their continental sample is small, but a Gamba back line missing its usual cover and with a goalkeeper question gives them room. Gamba should carry the ball at home and create enough to score as well.
Sagan Tosu against Kawasaki Frontale: Kawasaki are the stronger side and have scored in every one of their last ten, but they allow around fourteen shots a game and have conceded in six of ten. Tosu are strong at home, with nine goals in six home games, though against second-tier opposition. Set pieces and transitions are their route, and a Kawasaki side with a busy schedule can leave space behind. Kawasaki's attack is the part I trust most here.
That's why I'm siding with a goal at both ends in each match: leaky home defences, visitors who score reliably, and games that should stay open.
