Auckland’s new coach wants quick recoveries and more control of the ball. Melbourne City’s recent attacking work has started in midfield and spread to both wings. This match turns first on the pass through Auckland’s pressure, then on the deliveries and second balls that follow. Both sides have shown ways to reach the box after the game opens up.
Auckland created a stream of close chances in its home win over City last season, but Randall and May, who helped build that attack, have left. Cosgrove is available again, with Brook and Bayliss offering ways to feed him. City have repeatedly connected Mabil and Behich down the left, while Memeti has arrived on the far side; Mabil’s recycled delivery also helped create a goal against Newcastle.
The key contest is City’s first pass into midfield against Auckland’s recoveries, followed by Mabil and Behich against Auckland’s right side. Rossetto, Marcondes and Lopane featured in City’s September preparation but are absent from the current squad. Auckland are missing Howieson and Calver, who both took part against Al-Ahli, while Leckie and Nabbout are in City’s extended squad.
I expect City to work through the middle and keep returning to the left, then find Memeti or a far-post runner as the ball is recycled. Behich’s late delivery for Memeti in the previous meeting is a useful example of that supply continuing deep into a match. That’s why I’m siding with Melbourne City away from home.
