Two NBA matchups where one team's leaks line up with what the other side does best. Atlanta takes a pile of threes and crashes the glass from the guard spots, and Washington gives up the arc and the boards to almost everybody. Cleveland lives on three-point volume, but it keeps giving the ball away and losing the glass, and Philadelphia is built to punish exactly that. Neither game should be a blowout. The question in both is which side's repeated habits hold.

Atlanta against Washington first. Washington has allowed 34 to 56 three-point attempts in every game I looked at and takes only 24 to 37 itself. In the meeting on 11-04 Atlanta had 49 attempts to 26 and outscored them 57 to 18 from deep. That isn't a one-night quirk, it's how Washington defends. The glass points the same way: Washington lost the boards at Cleveland, at Charlotte, against Toronto and against Atlanta, and Daniels pulled down 16 rebounds, 7 of them offensive, in the last meeting.

Washington's best answer is Anthony Davis inside, against a frontcourt where Okongwu is the only true centre left. Davis went 12 of 19 last time, but he did it on a sprained ankle he is still listed with. On the road Washington's free-throw volume drops to 15 to 28 attempts, well below its home numbers. Atlanta's cold-shooting losses came against New Orleans and Houston, which force turnovers, and Washington doesn't force many (4 to 12 steals). Jalen Johnson is questionable for Atlanta, but the lineup without him already won by 15 against this opponent.

The likely flow is an Atlanta lead built in the first half on threes, second chances and bench runs, then a Washington push in the third quarter through Davis and the line. Atlanta's home margins against stronger teams don't point to a big win, so I'm only backing Atlanta to win the game.

Cleveland against Philadelphia is the closer read. Cleveland took 38 to 49 threes in its last seven games, and that volume is its real weapon. Everything else leaks: 7 to 23 turnovers (21 in the October meeting, when Philadelphia came back from 29 down), the glass lost in five of eight games, and almost no centre depth. Diop is on G League assignment, Tomlin is out, and Jarrett Allen played only 7 minutes in his last game after a knee collision. He is questionable, and Cleveland plays again the next night.

Philadelphia has the profile to exploit all of it. It takes care of the ball, its steals load Cleveland's turnover habit, Embiid drives its rebounding when he plays (48-41 at Detroit), and Maxey, Brown and Embiid get to the line 23 to 28 times a game on the road. Against Oklahoma City, Cleveland's two biggest three-point edges of the season still ended in losses because of free throws and slow starts.

Cleveland can lead early if the threes fall, like they did in the first meeting. The second half should swing to Philadelphia's free throws, its rebounding in Embiid's minutes and its closers in a one- or two-possession game. Its road wins have all been by five or six points, so I'm only backing Philadelphia to win, paired with Atlanta.
