[2026-27 KOVO Men] KEPCO Vixtorm vs Woori Card WooriWON Preview Kick-off: November 3, 10:00 UTC
The two teams finished last season just one point apart in the race for a spring volleyball spot. They meet in their first match of the new season. KEPCO Vixtorm came from behind to win their Cup tournament meeting, but Woori Card WooriWON’s Rafael Araujo sat that one out.
1. Match overview and team form
Since Seok Jin-wook took over as head coach, KEPCO Vixtorm have gone 2-1 in three Cup tournament matches. He said the team would spend the first two rounds working on how to handle strong serves and connect high-ball attacks involving the foreign players (Sports World, October 24). Last season’s top scorer, Sharone Vernon Evans, gives them a potent attack, but there has been little time for him to build a connection with new setter Min Kyu Lee because of national team duties (MyDaily, October 30). Seok rotated Lee and Seung Woo Ha during matches. Against KB Insurance Stars on October 19, KEPCO disrupted the reception with their serve and used Evans and Ha Jun Yoon to win 3-1, but they lost the third set after a run of errors from 15-15. Against Hyundai Capital Skywalkers on October 24, they could not keep their attack going after the opposition changed its reception lineup and lost 1-3.
Woori Card WooriWON have had head coach Park Cheol-woo, setter Tae Jun Han and opposite Rafael Araujo together since the latter part of last season. With Araujo resting, Park used Dong Young Kim for a quicker attack against KEPCO Vixtorm on October 22, and his team took the first two sets (MyDaily, October 22). But at 18-16 in the third, serving and quick-attack errors gave KEPCO a way back into the match (Newsis, October 22). Araujo scored 24 against the Korean Air Jumbos on October 24, but Woori Card lost 0-3. At 35-35 in the second set, an attack error and a point conceded on a block cost them the set. Ji Han Kim missed the Cup tournament with lower back pain, and his availability for today has not been announced (Money Today, October 30). If he is out, Park will have fewer options for combining outside hitters of different heights. Both teams had 10 days off after October 24. How well Usman Faryad Ali has recovered his fitness, whether Araujo is fully fit, and whether the link between Evans and Lee has improved will all affect their early form.
2. Matchup analysis
The first key matchup is Araujo’s serve against KEPCO Vixtorm’s reception. Araujo ranked third in service points last season, and Seok has said his team is still working on how to handle strong serves. If Usman and Yoon cannot pass the first ball cleanly to the setter, it will be harder to use Yung Suk Shin’s quick attacks, leaving Evans to deal with more high balls. KEPCO can also put pressure on from the service line. On October 19, they won by serving aggressively and using both their middle and wing attacks. If Woori Card hold up in reception, Han can quickly connect MATIN AHMADI’s attacks through the middle with the wing hitters. For both teams, the key will be limiting the opponent’s middle attack after serving.
The second matchup is each team’s opposite against the other side’s block. When Araujo is attacking in the front row, Shin’s help on the block will matter against the 188 cm Usman. At the other end, Woori Card’s outside hitter combination will need to contain Evans. Park said he could use Si Mon Lee and Sung Jeong Han against strong serves, or Ji Han Kim and Hyung Geun Kim when he needs height (Money Today, October 30). With Kim’s availability uncertain, choosing a lineup to prioritise reception could leave them shorter at the net against Evans. KEPCO came back from 0-2 against Woori Card on October 22 after replacing Evans with Tae Ho Lee and changing the setter and attacking combination. The turnaround began after a series of Woori Card errors, so the substitutions alone do not explain the result. Woori Card can also bring in Dong Young Kim to speed up the attack, but that would mean taking Araujo out.
3. Final prediction
We expect KEPCO Vixtorm to win in five sets. Woori Card have a familiar combination of coach, setter and main scorer, and Araujo’s serve could help them take the opening sets. KEPCO should then adjust their attack by changing setters and hitters, and rely on Evans’ offense and Shin’s quick attacks and blocking in the closing stages. A longer match should also produce a higher total. Seok said he would make a substitution if the setter struggled (MyDaily, October 22), and KEPCO did change their combination to come back from 0-2 in their meeting that same day (MyDaily and Newsis, October 22).
The market gives KEPCO Vixtorm a slight edge, and we agree on the winner. Evans’ scoring last season and KEPCO’s Cup comeback alone do not explain why they should have the edge today. Araujo was resting in that match, and Woori Card’s errors set up the comeback. The more relevant factors today are that Woori Card must choose between reception and height with Kim’s availability still uncertain, while KEPCO can change their attacking combinations during the match. If KEPCO’s reception is badly disrupted from the start and Hyung Geun Kim shares the scoring load, Woori Card could wrap it up in four sets.
[Final picks · by market · based on Betman listings] Match winner: KEPCO Vixtorm to win. Woori Card have to give something up between reception and height, while KEPCO have more ways to score in the closing stages of a set and more options off the bench. Total 186.5: Over. If the match goes to five sets, the total should clear the line even with one or two one-sided sets. Set handicap -1.5: Loss. KEPCO tend to look for the right combination through substitutions after dropping a set, while Woori Card can take two sets through their serving and continuity.
