[2026–27 French Ligue 1] Le Mans FC vs Toulouse: Match Preview Kick-off: 18:45 UTC on 16 October
Le Mans FC and Toulouse meet at Stade Marie-Marvingt at 18:45 UTC on 16 October in round seven of Ligue 1. Both have six points, sitting 14th and 15th respectively, and are level on points with Auxerre in the relegation play-off spot in 16th. Their positions are similar, but Le Mans FC tend to create chances in the first half while Toulouse have been scoring after the break.
1. Match overview and team form
Le Mans FC are back in Ligue 1 for the first time in 16 years. Patrick Videira took charge when the club were in the third tier and led them to promotion to the top flight two years later. They went without a win in their first five matches this season, then beat Lorient 2-1 at home for their first victory. Their record now stands at 1 win, 3 draws and 2 defeats, with 10 goals scored and 12 conceded. They have scored in all six Ligue 1 matches, and have found the net twice in each of their three home games, recording 1 win and 2 draws. Their unbeaten home record has not come from keeping goals out: they have conceded five times in those three matches.
Toulouse also have 1 win, 3 draws and 2 defeats, with 9 goals scored and 11 conceded. Jens Askou took charge in May, so Toulouse's results last season are not a useful guide to the current team's form. They managed only two goals in his first three matches, but have scored seven in their last three since Casper Tengstedt joined, taking 1 win and 2 draws. Tengstedt has 4 goals and 1 assist in 226 Ligue 1 minutes, while Thomas Jørgensen has 2 goals and 1 assist. All three of Toulouse's away matches have ended 2-2. They are unbeaten on the road but have yet to win, and have conceded twice in each game.
Ligue 1 this season First-half goals scored and conceded: Le Mans FC 6 and 6 / Toulouse 1 and 5 Second-half goals scored and conceded: Le Mans FC 4 and 6 / Toulouse 8 and 6 Home and away records: Le Mans FC at home, 1 win and 2 draws / Toulouse away, 3 draws
The teams have reached the same points total in different ways. Le Mans FC have taken 1 win and 3 draws in four matches where they went ahead. They led against Brest, Nice and RC Lens before being pegged back, and held on for a 2-1 win only against Lorient. Toulouse came back from 0-2 at half-time to draw 2-2 away to both Lorient and Monaco. They also failed to score before half-time against Le Havre, then hit three goals after the break to win. All seven of their goals in the last three matches came in the second half. Those timing patterns against different opponents do not guarantee the order of goals in this match.
Le Mans FC will be without Adil Boulbina, who had been driving their first-half attack. Boulbina suffered an ankle injury after recording 3 goals and 2 assists in five Ligue 1 appearances. He scored three of the team's six first-half goals himself. Alexandre Lauray will find it difficult to replicate his role of making runs into the box from midfield or winning the ball high up before shooting. Lauray started the recent match against Paris Saint-Germain, but has no goals or assists in 358 Ligue 1 minutes this season. Le Mans FC created chances in the first half of that match without scoring, then equalised after the break when Louis Mafouta finished Lucas Calodat's cross from the left. They still have ways to attack without Boulbina, but their main first-half finisher is missing.
Toulouse captain Rasmus Nicolaisen could return from a calf injury. It is not yet clear whether he will start. Toulouse won 57% of their aerial duels in the three matches he played, compared with 48.7% in the three he missed. His return could affect Le Mans FC's long balls to Diallo and their headers from corners. At the same time, Toulouse's expected goals conceded did not clearly fall when Nicolaisen played. His return alone is not enough to conclude that Toulouse's defence in front of the box will be more solid. Reports say Ilyas Azizi may also miss out through illness, which could affect the attacking midfield options.
The teams last met in January 2010, when Toulouse won 3-1. The managers and squads have all changed since then, so that result offers little tactical guidance for this match. Both teams played their previous league games on 10 October local time and have had the same recovery period. Askou said that international duty and travel had left some key players tired, though we cannot say how much that will show in this match. Around kick-off, the forecast is for about 13°C, light rain and gusty winds. Both teams use crosses, so the weather does not favour just one side.
2. Match-up analysis
Le Mans FC usually line up with a back three and two strikers. Videira has stuck with building from the back and moving quickly down the flanks after winning possession, including away matches against stronger sides. Askou's Toulouse generally use a back four and look to keep the ball. If the expected 3-5-2 for Le Mans FC meets Toulouse's 4-4-2, Le Mans will have three central midfielders against Toulouse's two and could find a spare player in midfield. But if they take risks with their passes from the back and Cásseres Junior wins the ball high up, Toulouse can launch a counter straight away.
Without Boulbina, the clearest route for Le Mans FC is a cross from the left by Calodat. He assisted Mafouta's goals in away matches at Rennes and Paris Saint-Germain. Mafouta is the team's top scorer this season with 4 goals. If Toulouse use their expected 4-4-2, their right midfielder and right-back can double up on Calodat. Restricting him to crossing from deeper positions would blunt one of Le Mans FC's main attacking routes. If Toulouse's wide midfielder joins the attack and is slow to track back, Calodat could get a one-on-one against the defender. The positions of the wide players on both teams will determine where the crosses come from.
Diallo's aerial duels will also matter on corners and long balls from Le Mans FC. He scored with a header from a corner against Lorient. If Nicolaisen starts, that route could be harder to use than before. Even so, he cannot defend Calodat's crosses to Mafouta at the near post in exactly the same way. If Dame Gueye starts in place of Diallo or comes on later, Le Mans FC could look to run in behind the defence instead of relying on aerial duels. It is not yet settled whether Diallo or Gueye will partner Mafouta from the start.
Toulouse have been most dangerous just after half-time. Five of their seven goals in the last three matches came between the 48th and 59th minutes. Jørgensen made runs into the box to win a penalty or deliver a cross, and Tengstedt finished those chances. Tengstedt also delivered the cross for Shion Opong's equaliser against Monaco. Le Mans FC have conceded in all six matches this season and gave away a penalty for handball in the box against Paris Saint-Germain. If Toulouse increase their box entries after the break, Le Mans FC's three centre-backs will need to deal with both crosses and runs into the area.
Videira's choices at half-time will depend on the score. If Le Mans FC score first, they can adjust their defensive shape as they did against Lorient, then win the ball and counter. In that match, they went 2-0 up, prioritised defending and conceded only once. If their wing-backs keep pushing high, though, Toulouse could attack down those flanks after winning possession. Le Mans FC have failed to hold their lead in three other matches. We do not have enough evidence to explain all those goals conceded as the same defensive problem. Their approach after taking the lead will still shape Toulouse's second-half attack.
If the first half ends 0-0, Toulouse will enter their strongest period without needing to chase the game. Le Mans FC may fail to turn their first-half chances into goals without Boulbina, setting up that scenario. Even if Toulouse score first early in the second half, they will still need to close out the win. Askou's side dropped deeper after equalising against Monaco, then conceded late after taking the lead away to Brest and against Le Havre. Le Mans FC still have Calodat's crosses and corners, and Videira has previously made several changes around the 65th minute to revive the attack. How the teams adjust their defensive shape after the first goal may matter more than which side scores it.
3. Verdict and prediction
Our score predictions are 2-2 or 2-1 to the home side, with a 2-2 draw the likelier result. Even if Le Mans FC score first from a Calodat cross or a corner, Toulouse have a route back into the game through Tengstedt and Jørgensen making runs into the box early in the second half. If Toulouse take the lead, they will have to sit deeper and keep Le Mans FC's wide attacks at bay. Both sides have struggled to protect leads this season, so we expect a match in which each team scores twice.
The market gives Toulouse a slight edge, pointing to their experience in the top flight, their unbeaten run of three matches, Tengstedt's scoring form and Boulbina's absence. Boulbina's absence and Tengstedt's performances are relevant to this match too. But Toulouse's unbeaten run includes two away draws after trailing 0-2. Those results show they can fight back in the second half, but do not make a strong case that they can protect a lead and win away from home.
If Le Mans FC score in the first half, adjust their defensive shape at the break as they did against Lorient, and keep Toulouse out of the box without giving away fouls, they could win 2-1. On the other hand, if Le Mans FC go into half-time without scoring in Boulbina's absence, and Toulouse strike early in the second half before sitting deeper and shutting down the home side's wide attacks, our preference for the draw will be in doubt.
