[Serie A 2026-27] US Lecce vs Bologna: Preview and Analysis Kick-off: October 11, 22:00 (Korea time)
US Lecce and Bologna meet in Round 6 of Serie A at 22:00 Korea time on October 11. The venue is Lecce's home ground, the Via del Mare. This is the first competitive match after the international break. For Lecce it is a chance to cut down the early-season mix of wins and defeats, and for Bologna it is a game where the change of manager has to show up in the result.
1. Match Overview and Current Form
As of October 10, Lecce have 2 wins and 3 defeats from 5 games, 6 points, 12th in the table. Bologna have 2 draws and 3 defeats, just 2 points, 19th. The gap is 4 points, but the market still rates the away side Bologna as the favourite. Bologna's squad and their 11-game unbeaten run against Lecce in Serie A explain that. However, Bologna have yet to win this season, and their last 3 meetings at the Via del Mare all ended in draws.
First 5 Serie A games this season Record and points: Lecce 2W 3L, 6 pts / Bologna 2D 3L, 2 pts Goals scored and conceded: Lecce 5-10 / Bologna 3-6 Open-play goals: Lecce 1 / Bologna 2
Lecce's results have followed whether they scored. They scored in this season's wins over Venezia and AC Monza, and failed to score in the defeats to AS Roma, Cagliari and AC Milan. Against Monza, two Ivan Ilić corners in the first 10 minutes were headed in by Lassana Coulibaly and Tiago Gabriel. In the 21st minute Coulibaly scored from a low cross by Danilo Veiga. Lecce took the lead early, tightened the gaps between defence and midfield and held on, though manager Di Francesco was not happy with how they carried out counter-attacks in the second half.
Attacking after conceding is a bigger problem. In their last 10 competitive games, Lecce lost all 5 in which they trailed at half-time, with a combined score of 0-11 in those matches. Against Cagliari they had 57% possession but were outshot 11-3 inside the box. Against AC Milan their expected goals was only 0.17. All 5 of their league goals this season came from midfielders and defenders. When Ilić's delivery and Veiga's crosses are shut down, there is no case yet of a centre-forward scoring to get them back into a game.
Bologna's winless run is a different story. All 5 of their games this season ended in either a draw or a one-goal defeat. Against SS Lazio and Atalanta BC they created chances but did not score. Against SSC Napoli and in Raffaele Palladino's first game, at Torino, the quality of the chances itself was low. At Torino, Bologna won the ball high up the pitch and scored first, but of 8 shots inside the box only the one that produced the goal was on target. In the 77th minute Łukasz Skorupski failed to deal with a low shot and it finished 1-1. According to Opta figures reported by Eurosport Italia, Bologna have 3 goals from 67 shots this season, the lowest conversion rate in the league.
Palladino used three defenders and two wing-backs against Torino. Unlike the possession-heavy games under Tedesco, Bologna had 38% of the ball and started their attacks from high turnovers. During the international break Palladino changed the training method and intensity and prepared the back three. But Torino is the only competitive match played this way. How well the starters' roles and the man-marking have settled after three weeks of preparation will show against Lecce.
Absences on both sides directly affect how the attacks will be run. Lecce's Nikola Štulić was not called up after a recurrence of a muscle problem. Wilfried Gobbels and Paco Esteban depend on how they feel on matchday, and Di Francesco has mentioned Monteiro as an option up front. Bologna are without right wing-back Emil Holm and attacking midfielder Jens Odgaard. Cortea is the likely replacement for Holm. Artem Dovbyk is back in the squad and adds a second-half option up front.
Key positions Centre-forward: Lecce Štulić out, Gobbels and Esteban to be judged on matchday, Monteiro could play centrally / Bologna Piccoli expected to start, Dovbyk in the squad Wide and attacking midfield: Lecce the wide starters could change if Monteiro plays centrally / Bologna Holm and Odgaard out, Cortea expected at right wing-back
Both teams had about three weeks off after their previous league game, and neither has a midweek fixture before the next one. Bologna face Internazionale Milano after Lecce. That is why Palladino has stressed the importance of points. Lecce's Di Francesco also expects Bologna to come looking for a win, and he is wary of the preparation time they have had since the managerial change. Lecce's home advantage meets Bologna's pressure for points, but what each side has to do will change a lot depending on who scores first.
2. Matchup Analysis
Lecce's clearest chance of a goal comes from Ilić's set pieces. Coulibaly and Tiago Gabriel, who scored from the corners against Monza, are both in the squad for this game. Ilić was substituted between the 66th and 70th minute in each of the last 3 games, and Di Francesco has said he is fit for 60 to 65 minutes. So the time Lecce can use the same taker and the same scorers together is mainly the first half and the start of the second. How Bologna's new man-marking handles these corners has not yet been shown properly in a competitive game. Monza had already shown a weakness defending corners in that match, though, so there is also too little reason to expect those two quick goals to be repeated.
In open play, Lecce's right-sided defender Veiga faces Bologna's left wing-back Juan Miranda. Lecce's only open-play goal this season was Coulibaly finishing a low ball from Veiga. Miranda also delivered the left-sided cross that led to the opener against Torino. When Veiga goes forward, Lecce have more ways to score, but after losing the ball Miranda and the inside attacking midfielder can attack down that side. If right-sided forward Pierotti tracks Miranda, Veiga has less to deal with. That does mean Pierotti may start counter-attacks from a deeper position.
On the other side, Bologna have set up with Cortea wide and Riccardo Orsolini moving inside. Lecce beat a back-three Monza, but in that game their wide forwards did not help enough defensively, so both full-backs had to deal with the opposition wing-backs pushing on. Monza's goal back was also a low cross from one wing-back finished by the wing-back on the other side. If Bologna push wing-backs and the attacking midfielder forward together, how far Lecce's wide forwards track back will matter. With Bologna adding bodies in attack, Lecce also have to defend against Veiga's crosses when he goes forward.
In the middle, Coulibaly's runs into the box will test Bologna's man-marking. Against Monza he arrived late from midfield and finished Veiga's cross. Bologna conceded the winner against SSC Napoli after losing track of midfielder Stanisław Lobotka running into the box. If Lecce play three midfielders, Bologna's two central midfielders will struggle to cover all of them. If the attacking midfielder helps defend, Bologna have fewer players on the flanks, and if he does not, Coulibaly has room to advance. This duel depends on whom Bologna give the job of tracking Coulibaly when they do not have the ball.
Who starts at centre-forward also changes how Lecce move from defence to attack. If Gobbels or Esteban receives the ball and holds it up, team-mates get time to come up from their own half. Their physical condition could limit their starts and minutes. If Monteiro plays centrally, he can run in behind, but the hold-up role gets weaker. Even if Lecce score first, if they cannot keep the ball up front they will have to keep defending Bologna's attacks.
Bologna can also look for goals through high pressing. The opener at Torino began when Nicolò Cambiaghi won the ball off the opposition. Lecce conceded first against AS Roma early on after a centre-back's mistake with a back pass. When Lecce press, the target is Heggem, expected to build from the middle of Bologna's three defenders. Local assessments say he has not always found that role comfortable. Both teams have a reason to press the other's back passes early, but which defender actually loses the ball cannot be decided from pre-match records.
In the second half, Bologna's substitutes become important. Dovbyk came on against US Sassuolo and scored a stoppage-time equaliser. Here too Dovbyk, and Cambiaghi or Federico Bernardeschi, who drop out of the starting line-up, could be attacking options. Lecce may lose Ilić at that stage and the minutes of their centre-forward are also uncertain. That said, substitutions do not guarantee Bologna the upper hand. At Torino, high turnovers dropped after the changes and they eventually conceded the equaliser. Bologna have to add attackers while also dealing with Lecce's late set pieces.
3. Final Verdict and Conclusion
The most likely script is Lecce scoring first from an Ilić corner or early pressing, and Bologna pulling level through second-half wide play and their substitutes. We expect a 1-1 draw. Lecce still have the players who finished Ilić's deliveries, and Bologna's new man-marking has not yet been properly tested against that combination. If Lecce lead, they can tighten up and hold on, but with the centre-forward's availability uncertain, it is hard to keep the ball up front for long. Bologna can get back into it through the link between Miranda and the inside attacking midfielder and Dovbyk's second-half arrival, but given their low scoring rate this season, we do not see it going as far as a comeback win.
The market leans towards a Bologna away win, based on squad quality, the 11 games unbeaten against Lecce and the home side's weak attack. But the last 3 meetings at the Via del Mare were all draws, and the games Bologna lost despite creating many chances came under a different manager's system from the current one. Lecce's lack of a centre-forward may also hurt more in holding the ball after scoring first than in Ilić's corners themselves. For that reason we expect a goal each rather than a Bologna win. If Bologna deal with the early corners, win the ball high up the pitch to cut out Lecce's back passes and score first, Lecce would have to come forward, and Bologna could attack the space behind them and change this outlook.
