Two Efeler Ligi home sides go into this round with settled units, and both visitors are promoted clubs still finding their level. Gebze have started the same six in every official match this month. Galatasaray's core of Ma'a, Maar and Koç carries over from the side that just beat the champions. In both matches the visitors' reception is the unit that has already broken against top-flight serve.
Gebze against Sungurlu is a rematch from two weeks ago. Gebze won the cup meeting in straight sets, 25-19 three times, and no set was closer than six points. Sungurlu's best six on paper played that night: national-team setter Yatgın, the US opposite Ensing and the Cuban Uriarte. A week later Sungurlu changed four starters for the league opener, and Ensing came off the bench. Their only set against top-flight opposition this season came at home after they were already two sets down.
The key matchup is Gebze's serve against a reception line that keeps changing. When Yatgın gets poor first balls, he cannot build a rhythm with his hitters, and Marttila and Sotola finish the sets Gebze control. Gebze's injured foreigner was already missing when the same six won at Onikisubat, so nothing changes from their last match. I expect Gebze to control most of the match, with Sungurlu good for one set at most if Ensing finds his range.
Galatasaray's record looks worse than it is. Their losses came against Ziraat, Maaseik and a tight away game at Halkbank, decided by a 31-point finisher. Twelve days ago the same core beat Ziraat 3-1. Onikisubat's long winning run came in the second tier. In their one top-flight match they stole a 30-28 set from Gebze, then lost the last two sets 16-25 and 20-25 once the serve pressure started to land.
Galatasaray serve harder than Gebze, and Ma'a has Maar, Koç and two productive middles to choose from, which a second-tier block cannot cover. If Onikisubat take a set, it will be from a long ending, not from sustained reception.
That's why I'm siding with Gebze and Galatasaray to win clearly at home.
