[2026-27 Italian Serie A] Inter Milan vs Fiorentina preview and analysis Kick-off: October 25, 11:30 UTC

Inter Milan host Fiorentina at the San Siro at 20:30 Korea time on October 25 in Serie A’s eighth round. A win would put Inter level on points with leaders Lazio, while a defeat would give Fiorentina the worst record in club history for losses after eight matches. There is a sizeable gap between the sides in the table, but Inter’s congested schedule and Fiorentina’s midfield adjustments could affect the margin.

1. Match overview and team form

Inter are unbeaten after seven league matches, with six wins and one draw. They have scored 21 goals, the most in the league, and won all four home games. They have also conceded six goals at home while scoring 15. Their home record comes from scoring more than they concede, rather than keeping opponents off the scoresheet. Lazio reached 22 points on October 24, leaving Inter on 19 with a chance to catch the leaders.

Fiorentina are 18th with one win, one draw and five defeats, for four points. They have scored eight goals and conceded 17, and lost their last two league matches. According to Opta, Fiorentina have never lost more than five of their first eight matches in a season (Eurosport Italia, October 23). Vanoli needs to change the way his team concede as well as improve results.

Serie A after seven matches this season W-D-L and points: Inter 6-1-0, 19; Fiorentina 1-1-5, 4 Goals for and against: Inter 21-9; Fiorentina 8-17 Goals scored and conceded per match: Inter 3.00 and 1.29; Fiorentina 1.14 and 2.43

The teams’ recent numbers reveal differences that the table does not show. Across the six league matches with expected-goals data, Inter have registered 139 shots and 19.21 expected goals. That works out to about 23 shots a match, a sign of an attack that consistently creates chances. At the other end, they had 6.85 expected goals against but actually conceded eight. Bastoni estimated that around 90% of the goals they conceded came from team errors (MilanoSportiva, October 20). The loss of possession against Napoli and the space left behind the defence against Club Brugge support that diagnosis.

Fiorentina lost all three of their first league matches under Grosso, scoring once and conceding nine. Since Vanoli returned in September, they have scored seven and conceded eight across four matches. Their attack has scored more, but the defence has not settled. In the five league matches with expected-goals data, Fiorentina scored eight from 9.19 expected goals, while conceding 10 from 5.70 expected goals against. Vanoli said rushing in possession has contributed to their goals conceded (FiorentinaUno, October 23). These numbers alone cannot show how much the opposition’s finishing or the goalkeeper’s response contributed to each goal.

Inter must set up without captain and leading scorer Lautaro Martínez. Esposito could take his place and start alongside Thuram. The pair started together against Fiorentina last March, when Esposito scored with a header. Another possibility is Bonny starting ahead of Thuram, who could come on later. Stones, Pavard, Curtis Jones and Luís Henrique are also out. The absences in defence and on the flanks leave Inter with fewer options to adjust their back line once they take the lead.

Fiorentina will be without Ranieri, Parisi, Atta and Sottil. Ranieri started at centre-back in last March’s meeting, while Parisi is also unavailable at left-back today. Vanoli has named Viery and Valdepeñas as options in that position, and predicted line-ups differed as late as the eve of the match. Drăgușin and Pongračić are expected to partner in central defence. In midfield, a 4-3-3 with Fagioli, Ndour and Brescianini is expected. The plan is to sacrifice one attacker and use another midfielder to deal with runs from midfield.

The two league meetings last season ended in a 3-0 Inter home win and a 1-1 draw in Florence. At the San Siro, Fiorentina held out until the 65th minute before they were beaten by shots from Çalhanoğlu and Sučić. In March, Vanoli’s Fiorentina conceded on Inter’s first attack but restricted passes to their forwards through the midfield and avoided further goals. Ndour equalised after a set piece. Today’s match is at the San Siro, and Fiorentina’s defence has changed. Their midfield approach in March is a useful reference, but it does not guarantee the same result.

The schedule favours Fiorentina. Inter return just three and a half days after playing more than 20 minutes with 10 men against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League. An away trip to Venezia and the Milan derby against AC Milan follow. Fiorentina have had a week off since facing Como, and Vanoli trained the team to match the 12:30 local kick-off. Provedel is set to start in Inter’s goal, having not played in a competitive match since early March.

2. Match-up analysis

Inter’s 3-5-2 and Fiorentina’s planned 4-3-3 set up a battle in midfield. Barella and Zieliński or Mkhitaryan will join Inter’s attacks, with Çalhanoğlu supplying forward passes from the middle. Fiorentina want to use Ndour and Brescianini on either side of Fagioli to limit midfield runs and passes into the front two. Vanoli praised his team’s defence for cutting off balls to Inter’s forwards in March. The fact that Fagioli, Ndour and Brescianini all played that day provides a basis for today’s plan.

But blocking central passes alone will not contain all of Inter’s attack. In last October’s meeting at the San Siro, Inter scored with a long-range Çalhanoğlu shot and a Sučić dribble after Fiorentina narrowed the space in their defensive area. Last March, Esposito finished a Barella cross from the flank with a header. If Fiorentina shut down the route through the middle again, Inter can still use crosses and Çalhanoğlu’s shooting. Fiorentina’s midfield will need to defend the space in front of the box as well as intercept passes.

Inter’s right flank poses a more direct problem for Fiorentina. Diouf has three assists this season, and Bisseck also pushes forward. Fiorentina’s left side, where Ranieri and Parisi are out, will have a reshuffled combination facing them. Whoever starts between Viery and Valdepeñas will have to deal repeatedly with Inter advancing down the right and crossing for Esposito. Even with an extra midfielder, Vanoli still needs an answer for the left-back’s one-on-one defending and dealing with crosses.

Fiorentina also have ways to attack after winning the ball back. When Inter’s left wing-back pushes forward, Bastoni must cover the space behind him. Fiorentina scored four goals away to Venezia despite having only 37% possession, by quickly sending the ball into space behind the defence. On the right, they have seen crosses from Jiménez and attacking runs from Mastantuono. In the second half against Genoa, an attack that started down the right with Jiménez led to an own goal and a close-range effort from Ndour. The record supplied here does not show Fiorentina scoring this way against a top side this season. The possibility of targeting space behind Inter’s left is separate from the likelihood of converting that approach into a goal.

Set pieces give Fiorentina a route to score even with fewer chances. Pongračić scored after a corner against Como, and Ndour put away a rebound after a set piece against Inter last March. Provedel, who has not played in a competitive match for a long time, is expected to be in Inter’s goal today. There is no basis to predict a goalkeeping mistake, though. The key will be whether Fiorentina can create chances again from corners and free kicks, and how Inter’s defence and Provedel deal with them.

Early on, the key question is whether Inter can score before Fiorentina’s midfield shape settles. Inter have scored the opening goal inside 15 minutes in six of their seven league matches this season (Diretta, October 23). Fiorentina struggled against Genoa’s high press, conceding in the seventh and 15th minutes. But against Inter last March, they maintained their defensive approach after conceding on the first attack and finished 1-1. An early goal would not automatically mean their midfield plan had failed.

The managers’ substitutions could affect the margin after the break. Chivu has strengthened his attack by changing midfield and wide players in matches against Roma and Bologna this season. Even if Inter do not lead at half-time, he can bring on Dimarco or Carlos Augusto, Mkhitaryan and Bonny. If Fiorentina fall behind, Vanoli can add attackers such as Gonçalves and Gnonto, but that may change how many players they can use to block passes in front of Inter’s two forwards.

Inter face a different challenge once they are ahead. The short rest and playing a stretch of the previous match a man down could weigh on their second-half pressing and defensive recovery. They may also manage their starters’ minutes with the derby coming up. Inter have attacking options off the bench, but the absences of Stones, Pavard and Luís Henrique make it harder to reshape the defence. If Fiorentina find a late goal from a set piece or down the right, Inter could remain in control yet win by a narrow margin.

3. Verdict and prediction

We expect Inter to win. Even if Fiorentina’s midfield trio blocks passes into the front two, Inter have other routes to goal through Diouf and Bisseck on the right, crosses for Esposito and shots from Çalhanoğlu. Fiorentina’s reshuffled left side gives Inter reason to keep targeting that area. If Fiorentina add attackers in search of an equaliser, Chivu will still have attacking options to bring on in the second half.

Our most likely score is 2-1 to the home side, with 3-1 possible if Inter take an early lead. We expect Inter to score first from a cross or set piece, add another after the break, and Fiorentina to pull one back from a set piece or an Inter defensive error. Vanoli’s midfield trio stopped Inter from adding to their lead after the opening goal in March. Inter’s short rest and reduced defensive options off the bench could make it hard to preserve a bigger margin in the second half. Fiorentina also have a set-piece route to goal even without controlling the match.

The market gives more weight to a comfortable Inter win, based on the league table, goal difference, Inter’s perfect home record and Fiorentina’s absences in defence. We agree with the direction of the result, but think a one-goal win is more likely given Fiorentina’s midfield block in March and Inter’s situation for managing the game after the break. Our view would change if Fiorentina’s reshuffled defence leaves the midfield block ineffective. If Inter can keep feeding their front two, it will be difficult for Fiorentina to cut the margin to one goal with a consolation strike alone.
