Monza’s 4–0 over Cagliari looks comfortable on the scoreline, but the recorded chances were much closer. Cagliari still reached 1.90 xG to Monza’s 2.04, while Gustavo Varela scored twice and set up Jay Robinson. That combination of finishing and a connected attacking spell stretched the score; it does not tell me that Monza stopped Cagliari from getting looks. With Monza heading to Torino and Cagliari hosting Bologna next, I’m watching whether the chance balance or the scoreboard proves more repeatable.

Our provisional result and event log record four Monza goals, with Varela involved in three of them. The same match record gives Cagliari 16 shots and five on target, so there is a live question about the chances they failed to convert and the shots Monza allowed. Those totals cannot explain the quality of every possession, but they make the clean sheet a less simple defensive verdict.
