[2026-27 AFC Champions League Two] Muharraq Club vs Gol Gohar Sirjan: Match Preview Kick-off: 16:00 UTC on October 14
Muharraq Club and Gol Gohar Sirjan meet in their second AFC Champions League Two Group B match at Al-Seeb Stadium in Muscat on October 15 at 01:00 Korea time. Muharraq Club have no points after losing their opener, while Gol Gohar Sirjan picked up a point in the club’s first match in an Asian club competition. Muharraq are listed as the home side, but both teams are looking for a win away from home.
1. Match overview and team form
The match was originally due to take place in Manama, Bahrain, on October 13. The venue and date changed after Bahrain was unable to issue visas to Gol Gohar Sirjan’s squad (Kayhan, October 5). Muharraq Club lost 1-0 away to Arkadag, while Gol Gohar Sirjan drew 0-0 with Al Jazira in Tajikistan. If Muharraq fail to pick up points again, they will have reached a third of the six-match group stage with none. Gol Gohar Sirjan are chasing the first Asian competition win in the club’s history.

Muharraq Club have won the Bahrain league in each of the last two seasons and lifted the AFC Cup in 2008 and 2021. They started the new season with one point from their first two league games and changed managers. After interim coach Mohammed Adnan Ayoub, Helder Cristovao took charge on September 16. His only competitive match so far was against Al Khalidiyah. Muharraq went 2-0 up before half-time, first through Juninho Piauiense after a short pass from Bryant Ortega Carmona, then with a strike from Ortega Carmona outside the box. They conceded from a left-wing cross and a corner after the break and drew. The match showed promise in attack under the new coach, along with problems defending a lead.
Gol Gohar Sirjan ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 away win over Shams Azar Qazvin, drew with Al Jazira, then beat Esteghlal Khuzestan 3-0 at home. They are unbeaten in their last three, though the performances have varied. Against Al Jazira, they packed the box defensively and managed just one shot. Against Esteghlal Khuzestan, Ahmadreza Zendehrou’s crosses and through balls led to goals. Coach Seyed Mehdi Rahmati has varied the defensive shape and attacking approach according to the opponent and his starting line-up.
The teams faced different challenges in their continental openers. Muharraq had 1.11 expected goals and 13 shots against Arkadag, but only two were on target and they failed to score. Just five of their 30 crosses found a teammate. Gol Gohar Sirjan kept a clean sheet despite allowing Al Jazira 20 shots and 1.58 expected goals. Their box defending helped, as did four saves from Farzin Garousian and two shots that hit the woodwork. One match of expected-goals data is not enough to draw firm conclusions about either team’s attacking or defensive level.
The teams have never met in a competitive match. Muharraq have a record of 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses in four games against Iranian sides, but have never played Gol Gohar Sirjan. Their matches against Esteghlal last season also came before the current coach took charge. Current team selection and the venue are more directly relevant to this match than the head-to-head record.
For Muharraq, Ortega Carmona’s availability is a key question. He set up the opener with a short pass and scored from outside the box against Al Khalidiyah, but was absent from the squad for the Arkadag match. There has been no word on whether he is registered for the continental competition, so we cannot assume he will feature today. Gol Gohar Sirjan will be without Alireza Ehsanifar through injury (ANA, October 13). He replaced Aliyari up front in the second half against Al Jazira, so his absence could affect Rahmati’s options when managing Aliyari’s minutes.
The travel conditions are tougher for Gol Gohar Sirjan. The squad travelled from Sirjan to Tehran and Najaf, then took a bus to Baghdad before arriving in Muscat. Player Navid Ashouri said the journey took 48 hours (Negar Mag, October 13). Rahmati said the players had completed recovery training locally and were in good condition, so we should not assume fatigue will show from the start. Still, their league match against Esteghlal is scheduled for October 18, making their energy levels late in the game and the timing of substitutions worth watching.
2. Match-up analysis
Muharraq are likely to see more of the ball early on, with Gol Gohar Sirjan prioritising protection of the space in front of their box. Muharraq had 62% possession against Arkadag, but did not create enough dangerous finishes inside the opposition box. Gol Gohar Sirjan crowded the box against Al Jazira and cleared away crosses. If Muharraq keep sending in high crosses, the same defensive approach could work again for Gol Gohar Sirjan.
Muharraq have other ways to attack. In Manama, Arthur Rezende finished a low cross from the right. Against Al Khalidiyah, they scored twice before half-time through a short combination involving Ortega Carmona and a strike from outside the box. If Cristovao can reproduce that link-up play in the continental competition, and can call on Ortega Carmona despite uncertainty over his availability, Gol Gohar Sirjan will have more to deal with than high crosses. If Muharraq cannot connect through the middle, they could again have plenty of possession but few shots on goal, as against Arkadag.
Gol Gohar Sirjan’s attack depends on how often Ahmadreza Zendehrou and Aliyari can link up. Against Esteghlal Khuzestan, Aliyari headed in Zendehrou’s long cross, then held the ball up for Zendehrou to set up Mohammadreza Abbasi’s goal (Varzesh 3, October 8). Muharraq have conceded all four of the goals in their most recently documented matches from box duels or dead-ball situations. Against Al Khalidiyah, they failed to deal with a cross from the left and scored an own goal, then conceded an equaliser after failing to clear following a corner. If Zendehrou starts and supplies crosses, Gol Gohar Sirjan can test that weakness without needing many attacks.
Whether they can sustain that threat is another matter. Gol Gohar Sirjan had only two touches in the opposition box against Al Jazira. A defensive approach also limits Aliyari’s chances of receiving the ball up front. If Rahmati starts Zendehrou and Mohammadreza Abbasi and sends them further forward, Gol Gohar Sirjan will have more routes to goal, but Muharraq could counter when they win possession. Juninho Piauiense finished a counter-attack in Manama, while Rezende hit the woodwork on a quick break early in the second half against Al Khalidiyah. Rahmati has said he is targeting three points, but we will need to see the line-up to judge how far he will move away from the defensive approach used against Al Jazira at a neutral venue.
The goalkeeper choice is another variable for Gol Gohar Sirjan’s defence. Garousian saved all four shots on target against Al Jazira, while Mohammadreza Akhbari started the most recent league match. We cannot expect Garousian to repeat that performance today on the strength of one match. Whichever goalkeeper plays, Muharraq need to get more shots on target before that choice can affect the outcome. If only two of their 13 shots are on target again, as against Arkadag, Gol Gohar Sirjan can deal with a large share of the attacks by protecting the box.
The second half will depend on the starting line-ups and the first goal. Muharraq have won 8 of their last 11 competitive matches that were level at half-time, though most of those were against Bahrain league opposition. They lost the only recent match under the same conditions, against Arkadag, after conceding in the second half. Gol Gohar Sirjan have drawn four of their last seven matches that were level at half-time. If 0-0 lasts deep into the game, Muharraq will have more reason to commit players forward, while Gol Gohar Sirjan will need to manage their energy after the trip and Aliyari’s minutes.
Even if Muharraq score first, their lead would not be secure. They went 2-0 up against Al Khalidiyah and still conceded an equaliser after struggling to defend their box in the second half. Gol Gohar Sirjan have a route back into the game through crosses or set pieces. If Gol Gohar Sirjan score first, Muharraq will have to find a way through a defence that, against Arkadag, was able to sit deeper. Neither team have turned around a first-half deficit in their last 20 matches, but that record alone cannot tell us how they would respond after conceding first today.
3. Prediction and conclusion
We lean towards a 1-0 Muharraq win, with the decisive goal coming in the second half. If Gol Gohar Sirjan push more players forward after conceding, Muharraq could add a second on the counter. We expect Gol Gohar Sirjan to protect the box against high crosses in the first half, with Muharraq looking for a goal through low crosses or set pieces after the break.
Muharraq need to get off zero points, and in Cristovao’s first match their short passing moves produced goals, offering a different attacking option from their continental opener. Gol Gohar Sirjan can organise their defence as they did against Al Jazira, but it remains to be seen whether they can maintain that defensive work for 90 minutes after a 48-hour journey, in a humid evening match, with another league game three days later. If Gol Gohar Sirjan push forward, Muharraq’s counter-attacking play in the league also gives them a path to goal. Muharraq’s recent problems defending inside the box point to a close game, but we give them a narrow edge in the second half.
The market has Gol Gohar Sirjan as slight favourites, citing the quality of the Iranian league, squad value and the team’s three-game unbeaten run. We see those three matches as very different tests. Gol Gohar Sirjan have scored three away goals, but managed only one shot against Al Jazira at a neutral venue, in a match with a different attacking set-up from their 3-0 home win. Taking today’s likely line-ups and second-half energy levels into account, we give Muharraq a narrow edge. If Gol Gohar Sirjan maintain their defensive intensity in front of the box after the trip, though, Muharraq’s crosses could again be dealt with. In that case, our view could shift towards 0-0 or a Gol Gohar Sirjan goal from a set piece.
