[2026-27 AFC Champions League Two] Al Taawoun vs Al Rayyan Preview and Analysis Kick-off: 14 October, 16:00 UTC
Al Taawoun and Al Rayyan meet in Group C of the AFC Champions League Two on 14 October at 16:00 UTC, with the second round of fixtures taking place at Wolves Park in Buraidah. Al Taawoun picked up a point in their opener and will be looking for their first win at home. Al Rayyan have three points and will aim to stay top of the group. Their attack could target the routes through which Al Taawoun have conceded recently, while Al Rayyan’s defending after taking the lead could also shape the result.
1. Match overview and team form
The teams have made very different starts in their domestic leagues. Al Taawoun have just three points from eight Saudi Pro League matches and have scored only three goals, the fewest in the division. Across all competitions this season, they have four draws and five defeats in nine games, scoring four and conceding 16. Al Rayyan have taken 13 points from five Qatar Stars League matches, with four wins and a draw, scoring 10 and conceding two. In the opening group matches, Al Taawoun drew 1-1 away to Al Nahda, while Al Rayyan beat Al Faisaly 4-3 at home.
Domestic league: Al Taawoun, 3 points and 3 goals in 8 matches; Al Rayyan, 4 wins and 1 draw, 10 goals scored and 2 conceded in 5 matches Group C, round 1: Al Taawoun 1-1 away to Al Nahda; Al Rayyan 4-3 at home to Al Faisaly Last match: Al Taawoun 0-3 away to Al Shabab; Al Rayyan 3-0 away to Qatar SC Managers: Al Taawoun, Vuk Rašović; Al Rayyan, Vicente Moreno
Al Taawoun’s winless run cannot be pinned on one manager’s record. Zarko Lazetic began the season in charge and left after a 0-6 defeat to Al Hilal in September. Hussain took interim charge for the Al Nahda match. Vuk Rašović, appointed on 21 September, has overseen just one competitive match, the away game against Al Shabab. Vicente Moreno, by contrast, has been in charge of Al Rayyan since late March, and the team have gone six wins and five draws in the 11 matches with results recorded under him. The managers have had very different amounts of time to establish their systems.
Al Taawoun’s last two matches offered very different levels of attacking threat. Away to Al Nahda, they had 19 shots, including 14 from inside the box, and created five big chances, but scored only once. The opportunities were there, but the finishing was lacking. Then they lost 0-3 away to Al Shabab, despite the hosts playing with 10 men from the 33rd minute. Al Taawoun managed 15 shots against a compact Al Shabab defence, with an expected goals total of 0.90. Rašović’s only match in charge required Al Taawoun to spend long spells in possession, so we have yet to see how a defence-first, counter-attacking approach will work with this team.
Al Rayyan’s most recent match was a 3-0 win away to Qatar SC. Guedes Roger got behind the defence to score the opener, and Gabriel Pereira found the net after beating a defender. Moreno made several changes once the result was secure, limiting the minutes played by some of his starters. Al Rayyan have also been solid defensively in the league, conceding just twice in five games. They have let in nine goals across four matches in the Qatar Cup, QSL Cup and group stage, though. Against Al Faisaly, they led 4-1 before conceding twice in the second half. The league record alone does not tell the full story of their defending ahead of this away match.
Al Taawoun’s four league home games this season have ended in three 0-0 draws and a 0-6 defeat to Al Hilal. They have yet to score at home, though the information available does not say what defensive shapes their opponents used in those matches. Al Rayyan have scored in each of their last 11 away matches, but that run includes games from last season and matches from before Moreno took charge. The sides have never met in a competitive match. Moreno and Rašović faced each other in 2023 while managing different teams, but the squads and styles were different then, so that game is a poor direct comparison.
Al Rayyan appear to have a little more room to manage their squad. Moreno said there were no players unavailable, and he could bring on Aleksandar Mitrović or Hazem Ahmed in the second half. Still, a clean bill of health does not mean he will name the same starting XI as against Qatar SC. Al Taawoun announced that Saif Rajab needs shoulder surgery. The Al Shabab match, played without Rajab, has already taken place, and Abderrazak Hamdallah returned to the starting lineup. There is not enough evidence to conclude that Rajab’s absence alone has weakened the attack.
The schedule is tighter for the home side. Al Taawoun play this match three days after their away game against Al Shabab, then have an away fixture against Al Diri and a home match against Al Qadsiah. Their league schedule matters too, as they look to climb out of the relegation zone. Al Rayyan have had five days off since facing Qatar SC, and their next league match is away to Al Gharafa on 18 October local time. The forecast around kick-off in Buraidah is about 32°C. The gap in rest days could affect defensive recovery runs and substitution timing in the second half more than the heat itself.
2. Matchup analysis
We expect Al Rayyan to have more of the ball, with Al Taawoun setting up defensively before trying to win it back and move forward. Rašović has had success with defensive organisation and counter-attacks at previous clubs, but he has not yet had a chance to show that approach at Al Taawoun. Moreno said he had prepared for Al Taawoun to use either a back four or a back five. Whatever the formation, Al Taawoun need to block through balls while keeping enough players available to connect with Hamdallah when they win possession.
The key attacking matchup for Al Rayyan is Guedes Roger and Pereira’s runs in behind against Al Taawoun’s defensive line. Al Taawoun failed to stop a pass through the gap in their defence in the 18th minute against Al Shabab, conceding the opener to a forward who had run in behind. Guedes Roger’s opener against Qatar SC also came from a run behind the defence. Al Taawoun could limit that route by using five defenders to close down the space. Al Rayyan would still have service from wide areas and shots from outside the box. Against Al Faisaly, nine of their 15 attempts came from outside the area.
Who deals with crosses from wide areas will matter too. Al Rayyan scored twice with headers against Al Faisaly, including two first-half assists from Otávio. In the second half, substitute Hazem finished a cross from Al Ghanehi. Al Taawoun conceded a headed equaliser from a cross against Al Nahda. In that match, goalkeeper Mailson also failed to deal cleanly with a cross, creating a dangerous moment. Al Shabab’s second goal came after Mailson parried a shot from the side and an opponent followed up. Against Al Rayyan’s crosses and shots from wide positions, Al Taawoun need to deal with the loose ball as well as the initial attempt.
Al Taawoun have routes of their own to attack. Mohammed Al Kuwaykibi won the ball and drove forward against Al Shabab, drawing a foul from the last defender and getting him sent off. If Al Rayyan lose possession while full-back Jassim Gaber is involved in the build-up, Al Taawoun could try to attack down that side. Al Rayyan had 64% possession against Al Faisaly but still allowed seven shots from inside the box. Having more of the ball does not guarantee that they can stop Al Taawoun’s direct attacks.
The question is what Al Taawoun can do after moving forward. Al Kuwaykibi’s run against Al Shabab did not lead to a goal, and Al Taawoun turned their many shots from inside the box against Al Nahda into just one goal. That goal came from Rakan Al Tulaichi, who scored from outside the penalty area. Hamdallah has returned, but we have yet to see him finish a move after a run in behind under Rašović. That is why we should separate Al Taawoun’s chance to exploit the space behind Al Rayyan’s full-backs from the likelihood of turning it into a goal.
Both teams face a different challenge after the opener. If Al Rayyan take the lead, Al Taawoun may send more players forward, leaving more space behind for Guedes Roger and Pereira to attack. But Al Taawoun have not conceded more in every match after falling behind. Against Al Kholood, they came back from 0-3 down at half-time to score twice in the second half. Al Rayyan have not always managed leads comfortably either. They conceded an equaliser after scoring early against Al Duhail, and against Al Faisaly they failed to keep out dangerous shots on target after building a big lead.
If Al Taawoun get through the opening spell without conceding, we will have more time to see how Rašović’s defensive plan holds up and how Al Rayyan respond. If Al Rayyan keep pushing their defenders forward, Al Taawoun could find space to attack after winning the ball. If Al Rayyan score first and keep possession for long spells, Al Taawoun may have fewer chances to get forward. In the second half, Al Taawoun’s shorter rest and Al Rayyan’s attacking substitutes could both come into play. If Moreno rotates his defence as well as his starters, Al Taawoun may get another chance in that period.
3. Final view and prediction
We give Al Rayyan the better chance of scoring first and adding another. Guedes Roger and Pereira’s runs could target the space behind that Al Taawoun conceded against Al Shabab, while service from Otávio and Al Ghanehi could test the crossing issues that surfaced against Al Nahda. Rašović has a record of success with defensive organisation, but we have not yet seen that structure work at Al Taawoun. Al Rayyan managed their starters’ minutes in their last league match and can bring on more forwards in the second half after a longer rest than their opponents.
The market sees the sides as almost even, reflecting Al Taawoun’s home advantage as a Saudi league team and their record of not conceding in home matches. There is a case for that view, but we put more weight on how Al Rayyan’s scoring routes match the runs and crosses Al Taawoun have recently struggled to defend. The difference in league strength means we should not overstate the away side’s edge, but the match evidence points towards Al Rayyan.
Our score prediction is 1-3 or 0-3, with the home team’s score listed first. If Al Rayyan lead around the 30-minute mark, Al Taawoun may push forward in search of an equaliser, giving the visitors space to attack and a chance to extend their lead with their second-half substitutes. Al Taawoun could still score by breaking forward after winning the ball or by finding a way through after Al Rayyan take the lead. The main condition that could change this forecast is Al Taawoun avoiding an early goal and keeping the gaps between their five defenders tight enough to limit Al Rayyan’s runs in behind.
