[2026-27 UEFA Champions League] Galatasaray vs Barcelona preview and analysis Kick-off: 19:00 UTC on 13 October
Galatasaray and Barcelona meet at RAMS Park in Istanbul for matchday two of the UEFA Champions League league phase, with kick-off at 19:00 UTC on 13 October. Galatasaray need points after losing their opener, while Barcelona are looking to keep their perfect record in all competitions this season. The hosts’ early pressing and Barcelona’s attacks down the flanks look set to shape the game.
1. Match overview and team form
Galatasaray lost 1-3 away to Sporting in their Champions League opener. Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5-1 at home. In the standings published by the data centre on 12 October, Galatasaray were 30th with no points and Barcelona were third with three. Manager Okan Buruk said every point matters to Galatasaray and recalled last season’s home game against Liverpool. Galatasaray won that match 1-0 thanks to a penalty won on the counter and saves from Uğurcan Çakır. Buruk has clear reasons to target points at home against another top side.
Their records across domestic and all competitions show the gap between the teams. Galatasaray lead the Süper Lig with 16 points after seven rounds, but have scored 17 and conceded 14 in eight matches in all competitions this season. Barcelona have added a Champions League win to their eight straight La Liga victories, leaving them with nine wins from nine, 39 goals scored and eight conceded. All four of Barcelona’s away wins this season have come in Spain. This trip to Istanbul is their first away game in Europe this season.
All competitions this season Record: Galatasaray, 5 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats in 8 matches / Barcelona, 9 wins in 9 matches Goals scored and conceded: Galatasaray, 17 scored and 14 conceded / Barcelona, 39 scored and 8 conceded Champions League matchday one: Galatasaray lost 1-3 away to Sporting / Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5-1 at home
Galatasaray’s recent form has been affected by Victor Osimhen’s injury and their away schedule. They won once and lost twice in the three matches he missed, scoring only once. Two of those games were away against Sporting and Trabzonspor, so the results cannot be explained by Osimhen’s absence alone. Against Sporting, though, Galatasaray had eight shots inside the box and scored only through an own goal. They clearly missed Osimhen’s work in the front line, winning aerial duels and finishing attacks.
Osimhen came on in the 77th minute against Kasımpaşa and set up a goal in stoppage time. Galatasaray had been reduced to 10 men after Lucas Torreira’s 65th-minute red card, but went on to win 3-1 late in the second half, with Ismail Jakobs delivering a cross from the left and substitutes adding to the attack. It is still unclear whether Osimhen will start against Barcelona or how many minutes he will play. Sabah reported on 9 October that Buruk was considering limiting his minutes so soon after his return.
Barcelona will be without Raphinha. He has scored 14 goals and provided three assists in eight matches this season, while also leading the press from the front. Hansi Flick said Raphinha would miss both the Getafe and Galatasaray games. Barcelona beat Getafe 3-0 without him, with Anthony Gordon’s run and shot, Gabriel Jesus’s pressing high up the pitch and Lamine Yamal’s cross each leading to a goal. Getafe, however, sat deep with five defenders and conceded a deflected goal after just two minutes. This will be Barcelona’s first meeting with an aggressive pressing side since Raphinha’s injury.
There are defensive changes to contend with too. Galatasaray will be without Wilfried Singo because of a right hamstring injury, while Roland Sallai is also a doubt. Barış Alper Yılmaz, who played at right-back in the last match, could fill in again. Barcelona must change their central defensive pairing with Andreas Christensen left out of the travelling squad. Those changes will be tested when they defend Galatasaray’s set pieces.
Their record at RAMS Park gives Galatasaray a boost. They are unbeaten in their last nine home matches in all competitions, with seven wins and two draws, and beat Liverpool 1-0 twice at home last season. Still, they have conceded 14 goals in their last 11 European home games. Home advantage does not guarantee a clean sheet. Barcelona lead their European head-to-head record with six wins, three draws and one defeat, but their most recent meeting was in the 2022 Europa League. The managers and squads have changed since then, so those matches offer little basis for judging the tactical balance today.
The schedule could affect how the teams manage the second half. Galatasaray played Kasımpaşa on 9 October local time, while Barcelona faced Getafe on 10 October local time before travelling to Istanbul. Barcelona have away games against Betis and Paris Saint-Germain coming up. Flick may manage his starters’ minutes in the second half, while Galatasaray have fewer options on the bench because some players were left off their UEFA squad list.
2. Matchup analysis
Galatasaray’s best chance to take control may come early. Away to Sporting, they pressed high into the opposition half for the first 20 to 25 minutes and scored first in a scramble after a long throw-in. Barcelona have also conceded after losing the ball in their own half this season. Against Sevilla, they failed to deal with a throw-in from the flank and gave the opposition possession. If Galatasaray, with Gabriel Sara and Mario Lemina at the centre of their press, can disrupt passes into Rodri and pressure the centre-backs on the ball, they could create shots or set pieces.
There is a real risk if that press is beaten. Against Sporting, centre-back Eduardo Quaresma carried the ball forward in the 27th minute, drew Galatasaray’s press and played it wide, leading to the equaliser. Rodri drops close to Barcelona’s defence to distribute the ball, while Pedri links play through midfield. If they play through the press, Barcelona’s attackers can find space behind the players Galatasaray have pushed forward. Sevilla disrupted Barcelona’s build-up in the first half, but Pedri saw more of the ball as Sevilla’s energy faded after the break, and Barcelona won 3-1. Galatasaray cannot rely on their early press throughout the match either.
The most direct battle is on Galatasaray’s right. With Singo out and Sallai a doubt, Yılmaz could face Gordon and João Cancelo at right-back. Gordon dribbled past a defender against Getafe before hitting the shot that led to the opener. If Yılmaz focuses on defending, Galatasaray will have to commit one fewer attacker to counterattacks. Yılmaz won the penalty that produced the decisive goal against Liverpool last season. If he pushes forward and Galatasaray lose the ball, Gordon could attack the space he leaves. Buruk said Yılmaz’s role against Barcelona will differ from his role against Kasımpaşa.
On Galatasaray’s left, Jakobs’s forward runs will be up against Yamal’s attacking threat. Jakobs sent in a low cross from the left late against Kasımpaşa, starting the move that led to the winner. He also took the long throw that led to Galatasaray’s goal against Sporting. But if they lose the ball after Jakobs advances to cross, Yamal could receive it in the space behind him. Yamal created two goals against Sevilla with crosses and forward passes. If Galatasaray limit Jakobs’s attacking runs, they will also cut back on a route to goal that worked in their last match.
Raphinha’s absence gives Galatasaray a chance to hit back. Jesus showed his pressing ability by pouncing on a defender’s poor control to score against Getafe, but that was Barcelona’s only match without Raphinha. We have yet to see whether they can maintain the same attacking output while facing Galatasaray’s early press. Christensen’s absence presents another challenge in central defence. Against Kasımpaşa, Abdülkerim Bardakcı headed in an Aleksei Batrakov free-kick, and Galatasaray also scored from a set piece against Sporting. Barcelona conceded a headed goal from a cross against Sevilla. If Galatasaray can push into the opposition half and win free kicks or corners, aerial balls could bring them a scoring chance.
The teams’ choices will change depending on who scores first. If Barcelona take the lead, Galatasaray will need to commit more players forward in search of points. If they lose the ball after pushing up their full-backs, Barcelona can attack again through Yamal and Gordon. Galatasaray conceded again soon after going behind away to Trabzonspor and Sporting. Barcelona have also conceded after taking a big lead and making substitutions. If Osimhen comes on in that part of the match, Galatasaray could chase the game with aerial balls and crosses.
If Galatasaray score first, Buruk could drop his side deeper and look to counter, as they did against Liverpool last season. Osimhen’s ability to hold up long passes and whether Yılmaz can get forward from his defensive position will matter. If they cannot link up the counters, Galatasaray’s defensive workload will grow as Barcelona keep possession. Barcelona have Yamal and Gordon to attack a deep defence, but they have not yet had to come from behind this season without Raphinha.
3. Final verdict and prediction
We expect Barcelona to win away. Our score prediction is 1-3 or 2-3, with Galatasaray listed first. The likely pattern is that Barcelona play through Galatasaray’s early press with Rodri and Pedri, then target the right side of the defence, where Yılmaz is likely to play, through Gordon and Cancelo. If Barcelona go two goals ahead, Galatasaray could pull one back from a set piece or through Osimhen’s aerial threat after he comes on. If they push forward looking for an equaliser and leave space behind, Barcelona could add another goal. We rate 1-3 as the likelier score.
This prediction does not rest on Barcelona’s winning streak alone. With Singo out, Galatasaray may have to ask Yılmaz to defend against Barcelona’s left-sided attacks, leaving them with fewer options on the counter. Even if Galatasaray score first with their press, they will need a way to protect their lead during the long stretches when Barcelona have the ball. Flick’s management of his starters’ minutes in the second half could give Galatasaray a chance to come back, but Galatasaray also have fewer substitutes and will need to push forward to recover.
The market is strongly backing a Barcelona win, reflecting their perfect record in all competitions and Galatasaray’s opening defeat. We agree with the result direction, but rate Galatasaray’s chances of scoring higher than their results suggest. Their set pieces will test a Barcelona defence without Christensen, while the attack must share the pressing and finishing duties in Raphinha’s absence. If Osimhen starts and plays at least 60 minutes, Galatasaray’s chances of scoring a second goal and finishing 2-3 improve. If Sallai starts and Yılmaz can stay forward, the conditions for both Barcelona’s left-sided attacks and Galatasaray’s counterattacks will change, weakening the case for the two-goal margin we predict.
