[2026-27 AFC Champions League] S Al Nassr vs Neftchi Fergana: Match Preview Kick-off: 18:15 UTC on 12 October
S Al Nassr and Neftchi Fergana meet at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh for the second match of the AFC Champions League Elite West Region league stage at 18:15 UTC on 12 October. The hosts need points after a 0-4 defeat in their opener, while the visitors started with a 1-0 win and have made it clear they want a result in Riyadh too. The key question is where S Al Nassr can move the ball once their attack plays through Neftchi Fergana’s press.
1. Match overview and team form
S Al Nassr sit 16th with no points after losing 0-4 away to Al Ain. Neftchi Fergana are sixth on three points after beating Air Force Club 1-0 at home. S Al Nassr won the Saudi Pro League in 2025-26, while Neftchi Fergana qualified as champions of Uzbekistan’s 2025 league. The opening results alone do not tell us enough to compare the teams. S Al Nassr played their away match at the end of a congested schedule, while Neftchi Fergana’s win came at home.
Competition openers: S Al Nassr lost 0-4 away to Al Ain; Neftchi Fergana beat Air Force Club 1-0 at home Last 20 matches: S Al Nassr, 14 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats, with 48 goals scored and 22 conceded; Neftchi Fergana, 13 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats, with 41 scored and 18 conceded Recent home and away form: S Al Nassr have 9 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat in their last 11 at home; Neftchi Fergana have 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats in their last 10 away
One heavy defeat does not explain the recent changes for either side. S Al Nassr conceded first in all three of their September away matches. Manager Postecoglou spoke about the squad’s fatigue at the time, and the Al Ain match was the last of four games in 11 days. They conceded the opener after playing the ball back to their goalkeeper, then let in a fourth on the counter after adding more attackers in the second half. By contrast, they beat Al-Diriyah 3-0 at home on 10 October, their first match in 24 days, scoring in the 23rd and 35th minutes. Their opponents managed one shot on target. Rest and home advantage both changed, so that win alone does not prove all of September’s problems have been solved.
Neftchi Fergana’s recent away record includes very different results. They kept a clean sheet in 7 of their last 10 away matches, but conceded 10 goals across their only two heavy defeats, 1-4 to Bukhara and 2-6 to Nasaf Qarshi. Since the Nasaf Qarshi match, they have gone 3 wins and 1 draw, scoring 6 and conceding 3. In their continental opener, they attacked down the flanks repeatedly and won 10 corners. They had 13 shots but only 3 on target, and the winner came when substitute Zoran Marusic headed in Koffi Kouao’s cross in the second half. Manager Islom Ismoilov said he switched to two up front when the goals were not coming.
The teams’ season records also come against opponents of different levels. S Al Nassr have scored in the Saudi league and continental competition with Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix, Sadio Mané and Coman leading the attack. They went in at half-time ahead in 4 of their last 5 competitive home matches, and scored again in the second half in all 5 of their most recent matches in which they led at the break. Neftchi Fergana have also often found a way to win after going into half-time at 0-0. But their away clean sheets came against opponents in the Uzbekistan league, and the only competitive match featuring the foreign players registered specifically for continental competition was the opener. There is little basis for assuming their domestic record will carry over to this away match.
The biggest uncertainty in S Al Nassr’s starting line-up is at full-back. Right-back Sultan Al-Ghannam is out with a long-term injury, and left-back Salem Al-Najdi is also likely to miss out. Awad Aman, who played on the left against Al-Diriyah, picked up an injury during the match and his availability is unclear. Centre-back Abdulrahman Al-Amri has returned to group training after medical clearance, giving the team another option on the left. Nawaf Boushal has started all 9 of S Al Nassr’s matches this season, playing 810 minutes at right-back. Neftchi Fergana will be without defensive midfielder Jovan Djokic, who is recovering from Achilles surgery. The fitness of Abrorbek Ismoilov, whose previous injury flared up in the opener, could also affect their options on the wing.
The clubs have never met before. S Al Nassr’s AFC Champions League Two final against Gamba Osaka at the same stadium in May offers a useful reference, although the manager and opponent were different. S Al Nassr had 67% possession and 17 shots in that match, but conceded first in the 29th minute and lost 0-1. Gamba Osaka’s ability to hold their defensive shape after scoring showed that long spells of possession at home do not guarantee goals.
The schedule is tighter for S Al Nassr. They host this match three days after facing Al-Diriyah, then travel to Al Ahli three days later. Neftchi Fergana have had five days to rest since playing Khorezm Urganch on 7 October. The forecast at kick-off is around 30°C. Both the side that needs to sustain a high press and the team playing every three days will have to manage their energy in the second half. As of reports published on 11 October, there had been no official statement on the status of the match following the attack at Riyadh airport. Neftchi Fergana had arrived before the attack, and both teams’ pre-match press conferences went ahead.
2. Match-up analysis
We expect S Al Nassr to have more of the ball at home. Postecoglou’s side look to progress through possession and switch quickly to the wings after winning the ball. Neftchi Fergana’s approach is less clear. Ismoilov said in September that he wanted his team to attack vertically with pace and intensity, but he did not specify how high they would press or how they would set up defensively at the pre-match press conference. Where he chooses to disrupt S Al Nassr’s build-up could shape both teams’ routes to goal.
If Neftchi Fergana press high, S Al Nassr’s ability to play out from the back will be tested. Al Ain’s opener began when the visitors intercepted a back-pass to the goalkeeper. Who starts at left-back will also affect S Al Nassr’s passing and defending on that flank. If Aman plays, he could push forward alongside Mané as he did against Al-Diriyah, although starting a continental match so soon after an injury carries a question mark. Al-Amri could help with aerial duels in the box, but as a centre-back by trade, he may leave more of the forward work on the left to Mané.
That same press could expose Neftchi Fergana too. If S Al Nassr play through the first wave while the full-backs are high, Mané, Coman and Félix could run into the space behind them. Neftchi Fergana’s attacking full-backs and their response to losing the ball in central areas have previously been flagged as weaknesses. With Djokic unavailable, it will matter who blocks S Al Nassr’s first forward pass in front of the back line. If his replacement steps out when Félix receives between midfield and defence, the space in front of the centre-backs changes. If he holds his position, Félix can turn and drive forward. How much space Djokic’s absence creates will depend on the starting line-up and Neftchi Fergana’s defensive positioning.
If Neftchi Fergana start with a compact defensive shape, S Al Nassr will need another route to goal. They can look for crosses aimed at Ronaldo, Samu Costa’s runs into the box and aerial chances for Iñigo Martínez and Mohamed Simakan from set pieces. In the Gamba Osaka final, S Al Nassr failed to score despite their possession and shot count. We have little evidence to say Neftchi Fergana can hold out the same way, but the longer the hosts go without an opener, the later their breakthrough could come.
At the other end, Neftchi Fergana’s crosses from wide and set pieces will test S Al Nassr’s defence. The opener’s winner came from a cross Kouao delivered from the right side of the penalty area, which substitute striker Marusic headed home. If Kouao pushes forward again from the right, he will come up against S Al Nassr’s uncertain left-back position. Rotating between Perica and Marusic also gives Neftchi Fergana a target for crosses in the second half. S Al Nassr kept a clean sheet against Al-Diriyah, a side strong from set pieces and in the air. But Aman’s availability remains uncertain, so we cannot assume the same defensive combination will start again.
Whether there is a first-half goal will affect both managers’ choices after the break. S Al Nassr have scored in the second half in their recent home matches when they led at half-time. If they score first, Neftchi Fergana may push forward to chase the game, opening up more chances for S Al Nassr on the counter. If it is still 0-0 around the 60-minute mark, Neftchi Fergana could add another attacker, as they did in the opener. S Al Nassr will have to defend in the heat with only three days between matches, and it will be harder to manage their starters’ minutes if they have yet to take the lead.
3. Prediction and conclusion
We expect S Al Nassr to win. They have a good chance of taking the lead at home in the first half, and if Neftchi Fergana push forward, Félix, Mané and Coman can attack the spaces behind their full-backs and in a midfield without Djokic. Even if Neftchi Fergana add a striker in the second half as they did in the opener, that will create more chances for S Al Nassr as well as giving the visitors a route back into the match. We do not yet know how high Neftchi Fergana will press on the road.
We are close to the market on the match result, but we differ on the prospect of a big winning margin. The market has moved towards a heavy S Al Nassr win after their 3-0 victory over Al-Diriyah. Postecoglou made 3 substitutions as soon as they scored their third goal in that match. With an away match against Al Ahli three days after this one, S Al Nassr may manage their starters’ minutes once they are comfortably ahead. Neftchi Fergana can still look for a consolation goal through Perica, Marusic and set pieces. That points to a S Al Nassr win without the margin continuing to grow.
Our score prediction is 3-1 or 3-0 to the hosts. We lean towards S Al Nassr leading at half-time and extending their advantage in the second half against a Neftchi Fergana side pushing forward to chase the game. If Neftchi Fergana turn a second-half cross or set piece into a goal, it could finish 3-1. If S Al Nassr deal with the aerial threat in the box, 3-0 is possible. If Neftchi Fergana keep their lines compact from the start and deny space behind their advancing players, S Al Nassr’s opener could come later, and even a home win may be by just one goal.
