Newcastle's opening match showed an attack able to reach the box repeatedly through patient possession and wide delivery. Macarthur's opening win leaned more heavily on goalkeeping and a late change in supply. The key contest is how quickly Newcastle can move the midfield screen before releasing their wide creator.
Lolley is central to that picture. He created six key passes and two big chances against the Mariners, supplying Wood's goal as Newcastle produced nineteen attempts and nine corners. The official preview identifies Paull as his direct opponent, making the pass into that duel more significant than the clubs' opening results.
Macarthur allowed Perth six efforts on target, with Robinson making four saves. Their own strongest attacking sequence came after Fraser and Bernardo entered, adding crosses and the free-kick delivery that Aspropotamitis headed in. Newcastle's evidence of repeated open-play access carries more weight in my comparison.
The official Newcastle squad retains Lolley, Wood, Burgess and the previous defensive core. Grant is included after being on the previous bench, while Badolato adds a midfield option after a long absence. My view rests on the established connections rather than an immediate contribution from either returnee, and it does not require Toure to be absent for Macarthur.
I expect Newcastle to take the initiative, work the ball toward Lolley and keep Wood involved through repeated deliveries. Macarthur's later changes should make box organisation increasingly important as the match develops. That's why I'm siding with Newcastle Jets to win.
