Two V-League matches where the side with the steadier pass and more attacking options meets an opponent leaning on fewer routes. KAL host a Kepco side whose reception, setting and block all came apart four days earlier. In the women's game, GS Caltex bring a spread attack built on a pass that held against the league's best serving line, against an IBK side that finishes through two main hitters. In both, the question is whose reception holds long enough for the full attack to play.
KAL Jumbos v Kepco. KAL win through a spread attack and late-set execution: Ketrzynski scored 19 at 75 percent in the league opener, Jeong Ji-seok and Lim Dong-hyuk add more, and their serve scored at the decisive moments while Han Sun-soo and Choi Jun-hyuk won blocks at 21-all. All three opener sets were close and KAL closed every one.
Kepco's opener told the opposite story. Their reception broke under Woori's serve, new setter Lee Min-gyu was out of sync and was changed during the match, they lost the block count six to ten and their middles were outscored heavily. Woori read the attacks going to Shaw because the outside hitters were not scoring. Coach Seok said himself that the balance is broken.
That sets up the key matchup: KAL's serve against a pass that just broke, and KAL's block stacking on Shaw if Usman and Yoon Ha-jun do not score. KAL's dropped sets this autumn came in a crammed cup schedule; this time they come in on six days' rest. No absences are reported for either side. I'm siding with KAL to win clearly.
IBK v GS Caltex. GS pass well and spread the ball. Against Expressway they received at 44.6 percent, which let Kim Ji-won feed Tanacha, Kwon Min-ji and the middles as well as Silva, so Silva faced single blocks and hit far above her career level. Their wins this autumn came against Expressway twice and Hungkuk away, not soft opponents.
IBK under Manabe serve efficiently and have Victoria and Choi Jeong-min to finish, but Lee So-young is mostly receiving with a shoulder that is not fully right, so the attack is narrower. They lost to both Expressway and Hungkuk, and a mid-set setter change cost them a big lead in the opener. Neither side has a reported absence, and GS have captain Yoo Seo-yeon fit again for depth.
The match turns on whether IBK's serve can knock GS's pass off. GS have already passed a sterner serving test this season, and when their pass holds they have more ways to score. That's why I'm siding with GS Caltex on the road.
