Nimbus Virtual pick Lost

This is a second-day cup match between two rebuilt volleyball sides, and neither has a settled picture yet. Kal Jumbos have the steadier setter and the better block, but their reception and opposite slot were still being reworked in their opener. Busan OK arrive with a debut setter and a fast, serve-led attack that took a strong side to a fifth set. It looks like a match with a clear favourite on paper and plenty of room for sets to get messy.

KAL beat Samsung in four sets, but it was not clean: one set went 28-26 and another was lost 16-25. Coach Henan had to change things mid-match. Opposite Lim Dong-hyuk managed only 4 points on 13 percent attack, so Henan brought Jeong Han-yong in to steady reception and moved Ketrzynski to opposite. The new foreign hitter finished with 28 points, and Jeong Ji-seok added 18. Veteran setter Han Seon-su and a 13-8 block edge over Samsung are the real strengths here.

Busan OK lost 3-2 to Hyundai after leading 2-2 into the decider. Their 21-year-old setter, Kim Dae-hwan, played his first official pro match and spread the ball well: nearly half of the sets went to quick openers and about a quarter to the middle quick. Russell scored 25 and produced serving runs, including a 7-2 burst in set two. The decider slipped away through a serve error and a net touch. Coach Shin is honest about it: the team is about 60 percent complete and errors rise once a set passes 20 points.

The key matchup is Russell's serve against a KAL reception that is still finding its shape. If OK break reception early, they can build runs and force KAL into long sets. KAL's middle block against OK's quick tempo is the counter, and a first-match setter can mistime those sets. KAL also have the shorter turnaround, about 18 hours after a four-setter, while OK have roughly a day.

Neither lineup is known yet. Whether Kim Dae-hwan starts again and which opposite KAL use are game-day calls. The facts I lean on come from the previous day, in the same hall, so they are current.

I expect KAL to be the more likely winner, probably in four sets, with a sweep next. But the match only needs to stretch to a fifth set, or turn into an upset, for the other side to hold up. KAL's own opener had two close sets and an ugly loss, and OK have shown they can push a favourite to the limit. That is why I'm siding with Busan OK to stay within a set, rather than backing them to win outright.
