Galatasaray's two league defeats before the trip to VakıfBank have the same shape, and it's the shape that worries me most going into the derby. At THY they won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-19 and lost 2-3; at Aras Kargo it was 25-22 and 25-16, then three sets in a row the other way, the tiebreak 9-15. Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, came back from 0-2 down to win 3-2 at Beşiktaş and dropped the first set to Eczacıbaşı before taking the next three. So a fast Galatasaray start wouldn't tell us much on its own; what matters is whether they can still close sets once the rallies get longer and the pressure goes up.

The Fenerbahçe side of that is depth of scoring. Against Eczacıbaşı they had four players in double figures: Ana Cristina de Souza 22, Melissa Vargas 21, Arina Fedorovtseva 17 and Eda Erdem 14. When a team can switch the ball between three attackers of that level in the fourth and fifth sets, the opponent's block gets stretched exactly when it's most tired, and that is roughly where Galatasaray's leads have melted.

Galatasaray's own fitness picture is cloudy rather than bad. The club's mid-October health report had Myriam Sylla with knee oedema and Vita Akimova with an abdominal strain, and there's been no club update since. Their last outing was a 0-3 at VakıfBank without reaching 23 points in any set. The home edge is thinner than usual too: the club's preview puts the match at TVF Burhan Felek, the same hall where Fenerbahçe hosted Eczacıbaşı a week earlier.

The last meeting, last February, was a 3-0 Fenerbahçe win at Galatasaray, and they are unbeaten in four this season. None of that settles a derby, which tends to produce its own momentum swings. If Galatasaray go two sets up, does this group finally hold on, or is the late-set problem from THY and Aras Kargo still there?
