Three games where the roster picture matters more than the standings. In each one a side is missing the players who create its offence or protect its rim, while the other side is close to whole. These are not blowout reads; they are reads about who has the tools to control the game.

In Brooklyn against Detroit, the Nets have lost their starting guard Egor Demin, who left the last game after only ten minutes, and they have been giving up about 124 points a game. Detroit are 4-1 with Cade Cunningham running the offence, and they have already played three games without their centre Jalen Duren, so that gap is already in their form. Detroit tend to pull away through the second and third quarters. That's why I'm siding with Detroit.

In Miami against Indiana, the Pacers are without Tyrese Haliburton, Zubac, McConnell and two more, so there is no primary creator and no rim anchor. Miami have Antetokounmpo and Adebayo up front against a thin frontcourt, a deeper rotation and home court. Miami's defence has been loose, but Indiana has far fewer ways to exploit it. I'm on Miami.

In the KAL Jumbos against Hyundai Skywalkers season opener, KAL beat Hyundai twice in five days, 3-0 and then 3-1 in the cup final, winning the attack-point count 50-37 through setter Han Sun-soo spreading the ball around a deep group. Hyundai's opposite spot is still unsettled, which hurts its reception. KAL are also unbeaten at home in their last twelve there. I'm backing KAL.
