Two Champions League nights where the shape of the game matters more than the winner. In Bruges, a side built to run into space meets a press that leaves space behind it, and both attacks keep their main routes. In Milan, Inter should have the ball and the chances, but Shakhtar's compact block and Inter's own open shape make a rout harder than the names suggest.

Brugge under Leko score through three repeatable routes: Forbs running behind an opponent that has pushed up, Tresoldi's penalties, and late arrivals from Vetlesen and Vanaken. They have scored in each of their last ten and created huge chances at Inter. Lens under Cahuzac press high in a back three. That press is how they win the ball, and it is also how they leave room behind, which is how Sporting beat them twice. With Gradit, Ganiou and Nawrocki out, the Lens back three is rebuilt and slower to recover.

The other half of the picture is Brugge's leak. Villa and Inter both racked up big chance numbers against them, mostly down the flanks and through the half-spaces. That is exactly where Thauvin's delivery and Lens' wing-backs work, and none of Lens' absentees feed that route. Lens have also made at least decent chances in every game under their new coach, and their corners are a steady extra threat. Rain and wind should make the game scrappier and more chaotic at both ends, not quieter. I'm siding with both teams finding the net.

In Milan, Inter under Chivu create a lot through wing-back crosses and midfield runs, but they also give chances away when opponents run at their high, open shape: Brugge scored four at San Siro. Lautaro is out, so they lose their main finisher, not their creation. Shakhtar sit in a compact block and break through one-on-one wingers like Mendoza, who scored in both of their league-phase games. Their long absence list is mostly squad-list exclusions; the coach named only two players as missing. They have not lost by three or more in twenty matches, including PSV, AEK and Palace twice.

I expect Inter to win the ball back high and to lead, with the second half deciding the margin. Shakhtar should get a transition goal or a penalty along the way. That's why I'm siding with Shakhtar to keep this within reach.
