Barcelona's huge goal tally hides a split: it was built mostly against mid and lower-table sides, while both elite opponents they met this season beat them on the break. They now arrive at the Metropolitano without Rodri and Kounde, the two players who protect that space. Atletico get back the midfield pair whose absence made them look so poor against Bayern. This should be an open game, and whoever scores first shapes the rest of it.
Barcelona keep the ball, around sixty-nine percent on average, press high and create a lot through Yamal, Raphinha and Fermin. They lose when an elite side gets past that press and runs at a high, patched-up back line. Real Madrid beat them with a late counter, and at PSG they gave up fifteen shots on target. Rodri played in both of those games. Atletico win tight, low-scoring games: their own chance creation has been modest, but Oblak has saved more than expected in each of their last six matches.
The key battle is Barcelona's midfield screen against Atletico's runners. With Rodri off injured at half-time against Villa, Bernal or De Jong comes in beside Pedri. Giuliano Simeone and Julian Alvarez will attack the space behind a back line with Kounde missing and stand-ins around Cubarsi. At the other end, Hjulmand is back from his ban and Cardoso is fit, so Atletico's build-up has its proper base against Barcelona's press.
The absences move in Atletico's favour. Barcelona's front three all played in midweek and are intact, so they will create, but what protects them when they lose the ball is weaker. Atletico's only key absence is Romero, and the Pubill and Hancko centre-back pair played together recently.
Expect Barcelona to hold the ball and press early, with Atletico's main danger a turnover in their own half. If Atletico score first, Barcelona must push forward without their holding midfielder, which opens more counters, and Oblak protects the lead. If Barcelona score first, Atletico have to come out, and that is where Barcelona are strongest.
The conditions behind each side's record against top opponents have shifted toward the home side. That's why I'm siding with Atletico Madrid here, with the draw protected rather than needing a win.
